W03 - Modular Design & Prefabrication:
Leveraging Non-Traditional Design Tools

As the modular and prefabrication industry continues to grow, available
design tools and solutions are as well. This in-depth, hands-on
workshop, will allow attendees to design an outpatient care area for
modular design and prefabrication. Beginning with an overview of
research and trends, the session will include a discussion of non-traditional
design process tools, such as full-scale mock-ups and virtual
reality (VR).
Utilizing an exam room as the proposed design element, attendees
will break into groups to explore both a full-scale mock-up and virtual
reality model. Participants will work with each of these tools, develop
a designed exam room and evaluate how it affected their design,
space programming development and decision-making process (in regard
to room layout, medical equipment, furniture, sightlines, patient
privacy, fi nishes, etc).
Attendees will then regroup to review the experiences of prototyping
an exam room and lessons learned from exploring their space with a
mock-up vs. VR. The teams will share a summary of their experience
and discuss the pros and cons they found using each approach. At the
conclusion of the session, attendees will see examples of how these
tools were applied to past projects.

Why Words Matter More than Dollars

If most people are in agreement that healthcare's production of
carbon emissions is detrimental to health and we need to decarbonize
healthcare, then why have we not made more progress? In this
highly interactive and high-energy workshop, participants will quickly
learn (and practice) human-centered design techniques, focused on
the " carbon conversation " of this problem. Come discuss pressing
questions of the day like: How are we currently illustrating solutions
working towards decarbonization? How are we addressing the
" carbon lock-in " challenge? How are we consulting clients to lead to
carbon-reducing and budget-friendly solutions? How are we talking
about the issue of carbon, in a broader context, including domestic
and global calls to action? Together, we will rapidly ideate how to improve
this conversation (with our clients) to lead to better outcomes.
