Louisiana
The number of dispensaries in Louisiana licensed to dispense medical cannabis will soon expand from
the current nine.
Regulators informed seven of the nine dispensaries-or pharmacies, as they are called in
Louisiana-that they were each eligible to apply to open one " satellite " location.
Each pharmacy operates in a designated region of the state. A pharmacy becomes eligible to open a
second location once it reaches 3,500 registered patients.
The increase in patients is attributed to changes in Louisiana's medical marijuana law that permit
smokable flower products and make it easier for doctors to recommend cannabis to patients.
Maine
A federal judge threw out a Maine law that required all licensed cannabis company owners to be state
residents, opening both the medical and recreational markets to out-of-state business interests.
U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen of the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the law was a
violation of the U.S. Constitution's dormant commerce clause.
The law, she wrote, " explicitly discriminates against residents of other states, and Maine cannot
show a legitimate local purpose for the requirement. "
The Maine residency requirement-a policy that was once common among U.S. cannabis
markets-is the latest to fall as marijuana becomes a more nationwide industry with multistate
operators and brands that cross state lines.
