FIVE QUESTIONS
How do you document your
clinical experiences?
We have an EHR: electronic health
record.
So, we document just like we do
as nurses inside the hospital, as
well as out. And then, whenever
we write it up, we write it up in the
traditional way.
We get the consent from the
patient, we follow all the processes
we would for any other
case study that we would do in
the hospital.
I have a research director who's
academically affiliated; he knows
what we should do, what we could
do, what's the most ethical thing,
and we follow all the rules.
Because we come from health
care, we are hypervigilant to
actually follow the rules.
What are some of your clinical
findings with cannabis?
We have published two case
studies, and the abstracts are
in JGIM, the Journal of General
Internal Medicine. One was on
dementia, and one is on restless leg
syndrome.
Even people who don't have any
underlying causes, if they're in the
hospital long enough, or they have
a big enough surgery, many, many,
many people experience delirium
for two nights while they come off
anesthesia.
One of the things (traditional
medicine) uses a lot is
antipsychotics, and for some
people, that is a really bad idea.
They are not recommended for
older adults, and other than that,
it's watchful eyes, bed alarms,
restraints-and we don't want to
do any of those things.
We see this sometimes in assisted
living and nursing homes, where
you have even more delirium.
Oftentimes you have an underlying
dementia.
With dementia, a lot of people
are agitated, they're terrified,
they're anxious.
What we've been finding is both
in facility and the home, when
folks work with our nurses and we
make cannabis recommendations,
we're seeing an 80% reduction in
agitation and anxiety.
We've started working in more
facilities now, and we consistently
see the same results.
