Supercritical extraction utilizes temperature and pressure
to create a 'solventless solvent'

arijuana consumers are
demanding higher-quality
cannabis products. In terms
of vape cartridges, concentrates and
extracts, high quality increasingly
means whole-plant and/or broadspectrum
products made without
chemical solvents such as butane
or ethanol.
For manufacturers, one way to meet
the demand for products created
without chemical solvents is through
so-called supercritical CO2
extraction,
which uses temperature and pressure

to turn CO2 gas into a " supercritical "
cold liquid.
Supercritical means temperature
and pressure are pushed beyond a
critical point. It's perceived by many to
be more environmentally friendly-and
healthful-hydrocarbon- and alcoholbased
extraction.
In this case, the CO2
gas is colder
than the temperature at which it
would typically freeze, but it is part
gas and part fluid because of the way
that pressure and temperature work
on the particles.
That supercritical CO2
liquid gas is
then passed through cannabis flower,
extracting cannabinoids, terpenes and
other compounds in an oil. Pressure
is then used again to convert the
CO2
liquid back into gas, so that it
evaporates and leaves the oil behind.
Worthwhile Trade-offs
Supercritical CO2
extraction is more
costly and time-consuming than
hydrocarbon extraction; in return,
practitioners get whole-plant oil that
they argue is truer to the original plant
