UNBOXED Cannabis Packaging and Design Insights
Cantrip Can Adapt
Beverage packaging tailored to regional hemp rules
By Kate Bertrand Connolly
P
ackaging for Cantrip's
cannabis-infused beverages
plays an important role in
the company's distribution strategy,
which includes direct-to-consumer
(DTC) sales of hemp-derived
products.
Framingham, Massachusettsbased
Cantrip has a distribution
model that includes dispensary
sales of marijuana-derived THC
products in its home state. In other
state-legal markets, the company
will sell its products, which contain
hemp-derived delta 9-THC, through
DTC and retail sales.
Cantrip uses aluminum cans
for all its products. The company
contracts with a co-packer in
Minnesota for its hemp-derived
beverages and works with a mobile
canner in Massachusetts.
Cantrip products sold in Massachusetts
are low-dose, with no more
than 5 milligrams of THC. Flavors
include blackberry-lavender seltzer,
ginger-peach seltzer, lemon-basil
seltzer, orange soda and root beer.
In states where intoxicating
hemp-derived products are legal,
Cantrip sells 50-milligram THC beverages
as well as low-dose products.
The company entered the
Minnesota market in September
2022 and now sells its hemp-derived
products directly to consumers in
about 30 states via its website.
Protecting Kids and Fizz
To comply with Massachusetts'
child-resistant packaging regulations,
Cantrip uses XO reclosable lids.
" The XO lids are remarkable in
that they are reclosable and have a

gasket that fully seals. So you can
keep it carbonated the same way
a reclosable bottle might, " Adam
Terry, Cantrip's CEO and co-founder,
told MJBizMagazine.
" They cost about four to five
times per unit more than normal
lids, but it is every bit worth it.
We continue to use XO lids where
child resistance is required or
where reclosability is important, "
he added.
Cantrip does not require
child-resistant packaging for its
hemp-derived, low-dose THC
beverages, so those are sealed with
conventional can ends.
Certificate of Authenticity (COA)
labeling is not required for the
hemp-derived products, which
streamlines packaging operations
and reduces costs. For these beverages,
Cantrip uploads COAs to
its website, ink-codes batch data
on bottoms of cans and provides
consumers with a QR code to view
the COAs.
Then, " a few more language
tweaks and voila!-compliant hemp
packaging, " Terry said.
A Colorful Alternative
Cantrip uses sleek, 12-ounce cans

markets, " because many millennials
and hard-seltzer drinkers are used
to grabbing seltzers in this format, "
said Jess Brandon, creative director
at Cantrip.
" Color plays a huge part in our
design, " she added, noting that
white dominates many hard-seltzer
cans. " Cantrip cans stand out on
shelves with their bright, gradient
colors. "
The Cantrip package also features
the brand's wordmark (or name)
vertically, down the middle of
the can, so when consumers are
sipping, those around them see the
wordmark correctly.
Brandon said the choice was " a
small nod to the social nature of
Cantrip. "
