Cannabis accessories company retains iconic 20th-century style for new CBD brand

T
he packaging for Susan's
Own CBD products features
colorful, retro graphics that
resonate with the 1950s styling of
its parent brand, Blazy Susan.
Denver-based Blazy Susan,
known for producing cannabis
smoking accessories with a vintage
look, launched Susan's Own in
July 2022. Products include fullspectrum
CBD tinctures, gummies,
bath bombs and muscle balm.
The company launched its CBD
products under a new name to
create separation between the two
brands. " CBD doesn't equal THC, "
William Breakell, founder and CEO
of Blazy Wellness and Blazy Susan,
told MJBizMagazine.
" We didn't want to create any
confusion by tying Susan's Own too
closely to Blazy Susan, " he added.
Both brands draw consumers of
various ages and demographics,
but Susan's Own is especially
attractive to those 30 and older,
Breakell said.
Revisiting Main Street
The two brands feature distinct
retro graphics designed to appeal to
the overlapping customer base. The

active ingredient, CBD, is prominently
featured on Susan's Own
packaging to reinforce the brand's
positioning in the wellness space.
Breakell said that the midcentury
aesthetic " really hits a note with
our customers. Even younger people
who weren't around for that era "
love the nostalgic styling.
" We wanted Susan's Own to
speak to (consumers) through
unique design, " he added. " So, we
tapped into that retro look and
came up with elements that give
a nod to iconic design elements
of the era: script fonts, futuristic
shapes and icons and colorful
illustrations. "
Additionally, " there's something
familiar about the Susan's Own
logo-almost like you're looking at
a marquee on Main Street in a small
town in the '50s, " Breakell noted.

Beyond the Graphics
Susan's Own uses glass bottles
for its tinctures, plastic jars for
gummies, paperboard cartons for
bath bombs and a plastic twist-up
dispenser for muscle balm.
Recognizing that CBD users
might have dexterity issues,
Susan's Own designed its muscle
balm dispenser for easy, onehanded
opening and closing.
A QR code on each product gives
consumers easy access to the
product's lab testing results.
Going forward, the brand plans
to add topicals and skin-care
products. It is partnering with
model/actress Cynthia Bailey to
develop packaging and potential
new product lines.
Susan's Own is sold online
and in retail shops nationwide,
and the company is working
to get the brand into larger
retailers in 2023.
