Infusing Retail With
Business owners battle for market share
using innovative sales tactics

To stay afloat in
an increasingly
competitive retail
environment takes
creative thinking, whether that means
bringing more customers to your
store or bringing your store to more
customers.
To differentiate itself from scores
of nearby dispensaries, marijuana
retailer MedPharm in Broken Arrow,
Oklahoma, launched an in-store
bakery that serves fresh-baked infused
products to customers.
" We stand apart because we have
this, " MedPharm owner-operator
Denise Mink said.
The Vapor Room, a marijuana
retailer in San Francisco, approached
the challenge by setting up shop at

the popular Outside Lands festival
in Golden Gate Park, thanks to a
California license class that allows
cannabis sales at festivals and other
events.
" Any opportunity to get the word
out to a large group of people is a good
thing, especially if you're able to make
sales and provide services, " said Martin
Olive, the Vapor Room's owner-operator.
Of course, the ability to sell
regulated cannabis at festivals or
open an in-store bakery is dependent
upon the rules set by state and local
governments.
Many regulated markets remain
restrictive, such as Louisiana,
Minnesota, New Hampshire and
others. But the number of states that
allow creative retail is growing.
The Reef, which operates a medical
marijuana dispensary in Detroit and
an adult-use store in Muskegon,
Michigan, recently debuted a cannabis
casino that, according to the Detroit
Metro Times, includes a blackjack
table, craps table, roulette table, three
slot machines and a Plinko machine.
The games aren't played with actual
money; rather, customers receive
tokens to play with when they make
cannabis purchases.
Other retailers operate drive-thru
windows, sponsor puff-and-paint
gatherings and house cannabis history
museums.
Opportunities for creative retail
will continue to emerge, and retail
executives would do well to think
outside the box.
