The big pivot for us three years
ago was that we were having
a great deal of trouble getting
our medical stores converted to
adult use. And our business plan
was all about getting in early for
adult use.
We had this big facility that
could produce thousands of
pounds of cannabis each month.
And we had three little stores
that were doing medical business.
So that reality was pretty stark.
That's how we decided to get
into the wholesale business. So
that, in addition to our medical
home-delivery business, here
were two areas that we branched
into, to continue to grow.

I go to clients' facilities and I
talk to their employees directly:
" What do you not like about your
packaging right now? "
I get to help make things way
more efficient.
Even though it's just plastic bags
and glass jars, it's not as simple as
that once you actually go to these
places and you see how they use
them and how much work it takes
from seed to sale.
If you can make that a little
bit better for them-especially
with how much money it takes to
maintain these operations-you
can walk in and be in business
with them forever.

When you try to go vertically
integrated right out of the
gate, it's so hard to do three
completely different companies
and do them well.
It obviously takes cash
capital, but it also takes human
capital: How do you spread your
resources in the right direction?
We found out early on that we
were really good at concentrates
and we were really good at
edibles.
And so, we shed ourselves
of the grow. We got out of retail;
Lume (Cannabis Co.) is going to
operate our Ann Arbor location.
So we can concentrate on our
piece of the vertical and working
with growers.
