COLORS
What started as an FF&E refresh became much more when the design team for
Xiao Ting at the Four Seasons Macao Cotai Strip realized the tea house needed a
more vibrant approach. " The architecture of the existing hotel is white, classic, and
European-style colonial, and because the menu was Southern Chinese Guangdongstyle
dim sum, we had to make this restaurant-which looked like a bachelor's cigar
bar and was very masculine-feel more light, airy, and overall feminine, " says James
JJ Acuna, creative director of JJ Acuna/Bespoke Studio.
Acuna noticed that green, red, and gold were used a lot in Hong Kong-
green meaning growing wealth, red for luck, and gold signifying abundance. " I'm
not Chinese, so doing a luxury Chinese tea house from an outsider's perspective
allowed me the flexibility to play with the color tropes-but tune it, mute it,
make it pop. " The hues abound in red marble, green elements woven throughout,
and gold that appears in metals, pillows, area rugs, and the bespoke brass wall
sculptures that reflect local flora and fauna.
A bronze and brass gateway arch at the bar creates an iconic moment.
Decorative partitions that nod to a Southern Chinese aesthetic called Lingnan
give a sense of privacy by dividing the room into more intimate spaces, while
bronze, brass, smoky textured glass, timber, and woven leather make the
partitions pop. To round things out, the team clad large structural columns
with bulbous leather forms to given them a new reading, " one that is feminine,
sensuous, and visually soft to the touch, " Acuna says. BD
