A director of private investment firm WTI,
Sylvia Wong spreads her wings with the 15-room
Roundtree, Amagansett, on Long Island's idyllic
south shore.
What motivated you to become a hotelier?
Traveling has always been my passion. It has
brought me so many wonderful experiences
and happy memories, and played a big role as a
motivating factor.
What stood out to you the most about this
property? It's a beautiful setting-within walking
distance of some of the most beautiful white
sand beaches in the Hamptons, surrounded by
century-old farmlands and yet in the heart of the
village of Amagansett. I fell in love immediately
with the tranquility of the place, the chirping of
the birds in the back lawn, and the property's
historic past with a farmsteading legacy dating
back to the 1700s. Every time I stay on the
property, I feel relaxed and content. Life just
seems to be a little slower paced and sweeter.
Many guests have told me they feel the same way.
What was your inspiration for the renovation?
I made decisions as if I were decorating my
own home. Wide-plank hardwood floors pave
the way to a refined space, while furnishings
in whites and natural wood hues evoke a sense
of tranquility. One-, two-, and three-bedroom
accommodations set in private cottages feature
large living spaces, inviting family and friends
to gather. Every room has been renovated
with design details that embody the legacy
of our historic property but updated with
contemporary touches. The property sits on the
land founded by one of the destination's original
homesteading families, so the meticulous

renovation to the 250-year-old cottage and
the original barn and more recent structures
has united these historic touches with modern
design details.
What has surprised you the most? It has been
such a joy to be involved in the creation of the
Roundtree. As a woman in the industry, I strive to
bring this luxurious yet accessible ease to every
person that walks through our doors, whether
that's through thoughtfully curated artwork, the
touch of a fabric, or a welcoming gesture. BD
