How did you get started in the industry? I did residential
design when I was in school. I went to work for Turner
Duncan, and there were only three people in the studio. We
became business and design partners. We built an amazing
studio and literally could read each other's minds when it
came to design. It was a collaboration like no other.
What trends or movements in hospitality design are
you paying attention to? What does the industry need to
prepare for? We see outdoor environments becoming more
important and used in fl exible ways. Designing them to
adapt to different weather conditions to be used as much
as possible. The trend of guests wanting to work in social
settings for long periods of time continues to grow. In
our F&B work, the design of food to-go pickup areas has
become more important, accommodating all the food
delivery companies, and not interrupting all the other
restaurant functions.
What would you like to see in terms of a more inclusive
industry? It really boils down to paying attention, being
aware of the inequities that exist, and having the courage
to do something about it. Early on in my own career, there
were so many times that I was dismissed or sidelined,
clearly because I waa a woman, and a man in the room
became the authority, even though many times I was more
knowledgeable. The interior design industry has always

been more out front in being inclusive. The architectural community
and corporate hospitality can make more strides to foster a more
inclusive culture internally, and seek that same diversity in their
consultant selections.
Best advice you've received? Never cut what you can simply untie.
Beauty is always in the details. When someone shows you who they
are, believe them. Don't overcommit (I haven't mastered that one!).
Advice for a strong client relationship? Listen! Great clients have a
point of view and a vision, even if they do not consciously know it. Our
goal as designers is to realize and achieve the vision, and to exceed
expectations. I have developed strong client relationships by actually
hearing their needs and being a partner, not just a consultant.

forward to for Duncan &
Miller Design? I look forward
to creating an environment
that fosters collaboration and
creativity. We already have
such a great foundation of
being experts in hospitality
and F&B-it's fun and
rewarding to be able to
nurture talent and establish
a bespoke design-focused
studio.
