A terrazzo reception desk rounds out the look. That stone
is an intentional design theme used throughout the hotel,
Bernerd says. " It has long been associated with modernist
design, but we have sought to give it a contemporary twist. "
Inspiration for the color palette was also taken from
the modernist design movement, which Bernerd says is
strong and bold and oozes confi dence. " This is completed
with a play on texture and materiality with the use of
onyx, concrete, walnut timbers, velvets, and linens. While
the palettes nod to the past, we were keen to ensure that
the aesthetic was still current, creating a timeless look, "
she adds. " This, in turn, infl uenced our choice of colors, a
combination of rich and bold tones, that interacted to create
a rich, layered, and eye-catching environment. "
The theme follows through to the guestrooms and
suites, where the wide-plank and mid-toned fl oors balance
out the terrazzo elements found in bathroom walls and
vanities. A low shelf that morphs into a cushioned seat at
one side adds a playful touch. Guestroom wardrobes are like
over-sized jewel boxes, with glass doors and sides framed
in black metal, balancing the modern with old-school
Hollywood glamour.
All of the design elements work together to put forth
a new breed of luxury. " Informal luxury is more current,
perhaps more appropriate to our times, and certainly less
ostentatious, " Bernerd explains. " When pulled off, it's far
more cool, seductive, and in many ways more interesting. It's
all about the attitude as you arrive at the hotel and the way
the reception area fl ows seamlessly into the lobby lounge,
which is effortlessly chic and just so appropriate for LA. "
