Growth Mindset
Welcome to our Spring issue! Though we are by no means out of
the COVID-19 woods, there are glimmers of hope with vaccine
rates rising, allowing us to start envisioning a not-so-distant future
where we can return to the things we love. For our part, it's exciting
to see all the hospitality openings coming across our (still home)
desks. And it makes sense. According to Lodging Econometrics,
developers did not abandon their pipelines, but rather postponed
projects. In fact, the company reports less than 4 percent of
guestrooms in the construction pipeline worldwide were canceled
in 2020.
On page 10, we explore this growth in the boutique and lifestyle
sector, talking with leaders from three brands-Pendry Hotels &
Resorts, Lark Hotels, and IHG's voco brand-to hear about not only
how they weathered 2020 but also their expansion plans for the
year ahead.
We also take a look at three hospitality segments on page 18
that have our attention as we move through and past the pandemic.
Extended stay is experiencing a renaissance of sorts, pointing
to travelers' shifting priorities and evidenced by Blackstone and
Starwood Capital Group's acquisition of Extended Stay America.
With senior living at the forefront of people's minds, we delve into
the Canyons in Portland, Oregon-a project that aims to combat the
loneliness epidemic that the last year-plus has only intensiﬁed. And
it's impossible to ignore the wellness mega-trend, particularly with
properties that not only highlight a connection to nature but are
fully envisioned on the premise-including the Gfell Hotel by noa*,
which is quite literally built into the Italian countryside.
Of course, we are still looking forward to when we can ﬁ nally
gather in person, particularly at the return of BDNY, November
14th-15th at the Javits Center in New York, so please mark your
calendars. We will also be opening entries for the 41st annual
Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality Design in June.
