How did you get started in the industry? I worked
in the hospitality studio at TVS, on high-design and
large-scale projects. When we started Banko, we
took a second to fi nd the niche in the industry that
made sense for our new brand.
Do you feel that you had a " big break " ? No. There
is no such thing. It's constant work, a lingering
hunger, and small steps (back and forward) along the
way. Great projects do help in the climb, but it's a
marathon not a sprint.
What trends or movements in hospitality design
are you paying attention to? A focus on wellness
and appealing to all age groups. Also, an educated
traveler with lots of options. What will be the
differentiators and the deciding factors for the 'on
the road' business traveler? The industry [also]
needs to be prepared for a BOOM in baby boomer
travel; they are holding the purse strings and ready
to spend.
Best advice you've received? Don't be the girl good at
everything; fi nd your focus and be the girl great at
your niches. It's also okay to not be everyone's girl.
Not all money is good money.
Advice for a strong client/designer
relationship? Communication! When
expectations are missed, there is space for
disappointment. Close the gap.
Other advice for up-and-comers? Work for it.
Want it, study it, be heard but bring respect,
make it happen, own your shit, put in the time,
and be 100 percent. Be memorable in ethics and
grit. Raw talent only gets you so far.
If you weren't in your current role, what would
you be doing? Something in sales or running a
massive philanthropic operation.
What are you most looking forward to
at Banko Design and BD Studio Collection?
Having a front-row seat to watch my
teammates grow. Seeing where they want to
take the company-what other inroads we will
come up with. Dominating the ones we have
already set. New projects! Seeing my team
thrive is all I could ever ask for. It's a very
exciting time in our brand. Lots going on and
lots to still achieve. We will never stop growing,
learning, or bettering our brand.
