EXCLUSIVE RESEARCH
OUTDOOR TECHNOLOGY DEEP DIVE STUDY

the time it is for security purposes. Finally,
most clients (71%) already have some form
of exterior lighting in place before the dealer
is brought on to the project.
Digging deeper, the most common
application for exterior lighting is simply
accent lighting for plants, trees, fountains
and other features. That type of illumination was installed in 29% of outdoor
lighting projects. That is an increase from
20% of lighting projects in 2019. Pathway
lighting (28%), exterior wall wash lighting
on structures (24%) and staircase lighting
(23%) followed in terms of most common
usage, and all three of those percentages
represent increased amounts versus 2019.
Finally, motorized exterior awnings
were installed in 12% of outdoor projects, up slightly from 9% in 2019. Unique
opportunities in the category also include
products like smart pergolas from StruXure, which have motorized louvres and can
be controlled via Somfy motors. Likewise,
insect protection/privacy screens for outdoor patios from Phantom Screens as well
as awnings from Sunbrella can also be integrated via certified drivers from Somfy.
According to survey respondents, the
top brands being used in outdoor lighting
are Coastal Source, Kichler, Lutron, Somfy,
Colorbeam, FX Luminaire, Philips, Garden Lights LED, Hinkley, Lumascape,
Progress, Sterno, Targetti and Profoto.

UNIQUE SET OF CHALLENGES

The outdoor market may be strong, but
there are still challenges. Dealers rue burying cable, and told CE Pro that by far the
task of burying outdoor cable the most
difficult element of doing outdoor work.
That difficulty could be influenced by
many factors, such as rocky soil, having to
circumnavigate existing structures such as
walkways and concrete slabs, or even frozen terrain. One integrator reported having
to erect a large tent and install heaters over
the area where the technicians were working at one point. Indeed, weather was listed
as the second-biggest headache regarding
outdoor installations.
Among the other challenges integrators
indicated give them issues in outdoor projects are:

There continues to be a solid growth
trend for outdoor video entertainment. While TV displays are still the
prominent technology, the percentage
of installations that included projectors grew for the second straight year
to 10%. Back in 2018, projectors made
up just 3% of outdoor video projects.

Somfy Enables Broader Outdoor Integration
The outdoor living market is thriving for integrators and shows no
signs of abating. The initial stages of the COVID-19 outbreak drove
strong growth to the category as clients were reticent to have
tradespeople inside their homes, but more accepting of outdoor
installations as they looked to improve their wellbeing during the
pandemic.
That demand has driven the outdoor market into broader
equipment categories than just audio and video. For example, dealers can now
integrate unique solutions such as smart pergolas, automated screens and motorized
awnings into their installations.
Motorized pergolas are a really wonderful way to create outdoor living spaces, and
they can be customized for size and design. The demand for inside/outside rooms
with exterior screens for bug protection, privacy, and shade mitigation, can create a
multi-living space.
But integration of an inside/outside space is often not possible without Somfy
motors using secure drivers written to connect with third-party control systems such
as Control4, Crestron, Savant, URC, Elan and others. All motors are not created equal.
If integrators want their solutions to integrate well, they should specify their shade
solutions with Somfy motors inside.
Somfy works very closely with all its partners and fabricators to make sure there
won't be a problem integrating with the major control platforms. It helps us to be
able to bridge the gap between smart homes and really cool outdoor structures like
smart pergolas, exterior awnings and motored screens and shades. Dealers should
simply ask any device manufacturer if their product has a Somfy motor. That's how
they can be assured the components are compatible with and will integrate with a
third-party control system. -Brittany Mier y TerĂ¡n, Partnerships and CI Channel
