HDMI CORNER by DPL Labs
Revisiting the Contentious Topic
of 'Video Fidelity'
NOT LONG AGO I was having
a discussion with a reader
about the quality of transmission
lines. This conversation
turned into a bit of a
debate due to recent events
involving the new 48Gbps
8K video standards beginning
to hit the market. There's a
long-argued claim that cable
performance refers to picture
quality and not necessarily
reliability. Of course, we want
both, not only in video transmission
but any form of signal
transmission. Because our
current state of video transmission
is digitally transmitted,
this topic has become a
broken record - but here it
may have some merit.
The debate is about digital
video cables, HDMI or Display
Port, in that since they
are digital ones and zeros the
signal quality would be the
same no matter the cable.
Striving to achieve good
performance with signal
throughput has always been
a challenge and throughout
our experience with digital
video, these performance
levels have become even
more critical as data rates
increased.
If we looked back to our
older NTSC transmission,
high performance throughput
was needed due to the
nature of its transmission. It
was analog and had a video
bandwidth of about 4MHz.
Not a lot, but a pretty big

deal back then when to get
broadcast signals transmitted
over the air, TV receivers
required special circuitry to
deliver a decent picture. A
part of the RF system known
as its IF Strip (Intermediate
Frequency Amplifier Strip)

than synchronously turned to
handle the large bandwidth.

its LC circuits stagger-tuned

satisfied, the user would
never get the chance to even
judge if one cable looked
better than another because
the picture would have
gone dark first. So really, the
reliability of cables hinges
greatly on its quality with
ones and zeros. There are
areas where low thresholds
can induce errors in the signal,
and since 18G 4K signal
formats became available
error correction was introUntil
