MAY: We saw some improvements
over 2021 early
this year, although rising fuel
costs and infl ation continue
to make 2022 challenging.
Disruptions in ports and
transportation haven't
subsided. COVID outbreaks
in Asia are still closing ports
and exacerbating backlogs.
Many manufacturers have
taken the initiative to diversify
their supply chains so
their production isn't limited
to one geography or facility.
At D&H, when we're faced
with product delays due to
these issues, we encourage
our integrator partners to
diversify as well, identifying
equally strong brands so
we can substitute when
needed.
CE Pro: How would you
scale the supply chain
situation today versus this
exact time last year and why?
MAY: This is hard to
predict because the supply
chain is still tenuous
in some respects. Cost
increases have occurred
in many categories that
have been passed on, and
infl ation hasn't peaked yet.
A container from Asia that
might have cost $3,000 two
years previous could cost
as much as $20,000 now. If
that container is fi lled with
merchandise with a high average
selling price (ASP), the

ERIC BODLEY: Our fi rst
step to address the supply
chain crisis was to increase
the in-stock information on
our website to better inform
our customers of what was
immediately available versus
products that were delayed.
Second, we placed increased
orders for products
we knew were going to be
an issue, so although it was
an increased investment,
it allowed us to meet our
customers' needs. Next, we
changed our shipping method
from ocean freight to air
freight - again at increased
cost to us, but at a minimal
cost increase to our customers.
Last, we would off er
the next better product as
an upgrade, at no additional
cost, if we were out of a
particular item.

BODLEY: Defi nitely better.
Again, shipping costs are
still too high, but shipping
times are much better.
CE Pro: What is the most
important thing integrators
can do in terms of their
ordering, inventory, etc., to
improve their own supply
chain situation?
BODLEY: Most of our
customers have realized
that the " just-in-time "
philosophy of ordering is
over. Over the past 10 years
or so, most integrators did
not keep reasonable stock
levels on everyday products
used on every job - and
found that a $100 cable
being unavailable would
hold up a $100,000 job from
being completed. We are
now seeing more and more
" stocking " orders for cables,
connectors, HDMI extenders,
backup UPS products,

now gone from being a
" crisis " to being the new
normal. We anticipate some
spot shortages, but most of
the products we distribute
are available with reasonable
shipping times. The cost
of shipping, however, will
remain high for the foreseeable
future.
