Leveraging Lighting to Control
Nature-Inspired Lodge
IN MOST HIGHLY AUTOMATED HOMES, systems integrators put a traditional control
system in charge. This approach didn't sit right with the owners of this luxury estate,
however. They wanted the indigenous materials and nature-inspired design to dictate the look
and feel of the Taconic Lodge, not the technology. Rich AV Design knew the best solution would
be a system proficient in the management of lighting to beautifully accentuate the residence's
unique architectural features, but with enough home control horsepower to also supervise other
aspects of the home environment. Lutron's QSX possesses both the lighting acumen and the
automation muscle to bring this vision to fruition, according to Rich AV Design's Josh Rich.
The Lutron QSX system leverages the capabilities of a host of third-party subsystems via a
combination of Picos, color-matched SeeTouch keypads, and the Lutron app.
Rich AV Design did all they could to marry modern tech with rustic design, especially when
it came to the home's window treatments. The owners loved the look of their home's existing
Roman shades, so rather than part with them for a smart shading alternative, Rich AV Design
fitted them with custom Lutron Triathlon motors and folded them into the well-tailored and
choreographed automation routines. They also got clever in the master bathroom. Here Rich AV
Design relied on the precision of the Lutron motors, its hembar alignment technology and their
own carefully crafted control sequence to enable the shades to move up and down at the same
time and remain level with each other.
All areas of the estate are well-appointed with technology, including six indoor and outdoor
living rooms, two kitchens, a dining hall, a wine cellar, spa. Yet, the owners only notice how convenient,
comfortable and elegant it all looks and feels and how the lighting enriches the design
- not the hardware that contributes to the effect.
Perhaps the best illustration of this high level of integration,
automation and customization happens in the home's
" Bat Cave, " a garage only accessible via a secret driveway or a
hidden door in the main level of the house. Here, Rich notes,
the owner showcases his antique car collection on a motorized
platter that moves the cars around, accentuated by matching
colored Ketra lighting. " As cars are added or exchanged in the
collection, the colors of the Ketra lighting system can be easily
adjusted to match, " he says.
A finger tap of a Lutron Visor controller or signal from a
Cartel driveway sensor kick starts the show with Lutron QSX
activating a series of lights in the Bat Cave tunnel, and finally
the Ketra lighting in the Bat Cave garage. CE Pro
