Launches
Direct Guest Join
IN A SIGNIFICANT STEP toward
interoperability between
major videoconferencing
platforms, Microsoft is making
it easier to join third-party
meeting platforms from Teams
Rooms, starting with Zoom,
with the launch of Direct
Guest Join.
The Redmond, Wash.-based
company calls Direct Guest
Join a " one-touch experience "
that enables users to join a
third-party online meeting from
their Teams Rooms just as easily
as joining a Teams meeting. The
solution will help reduce friction
when users join calls from
external partners or clients that
don't use the same meeting
provider. In short, this will allow
users to join meetings on other
platforms through Teams.
Although Microsoft says the
interoperability of Direct Guest
Join will begin with Zoom,
the company says it also
worked with meeting-platform
competitors like Cisco Webex,
GoToMeeting and BlueJeans.
Left out, at least so far, is Google
Meet.
" Third-party providers like
Zoom provide an embedded
web experience that temporarily
allows Teams Rooms users
to join third-party meetings
and collaborate more freely, "
the company says in a Tech
Community blog. " This web
experience provides upto-date
software, as well as
enterprise-grade privacy and
security. " As this partnership
grows, the companies will add
new features and functionalities,
the blog indicates.
To enable Direct Guest Join,

to handle multiple functions
simultaneously so broadcasters
can deliver new and immersive
viewing experiences. "
The high-performance and
Conferencing has become an indispensable part of our dayto-day
workflows. The trend toward interoperability is very
much welcome among those who shift between platforms.
Microsoft says admins should
do the following:
› Configure the Teams Rooms'
Exchange Online room
mailbox to process invites for
third-party meetings.
› Ensure your organization
doesn't have any policies that
prevent from connecting to
third-party meeting services.
› Configure Teams Rooms to
allow third-party meetings.
The company also teased
a joint webcast between
Microsoft and Zoom, featuring
Ilya Bukshteyn, vice president
of Teams Calling and Devices,
and Jeff Smith, head of Zoom
Rooms and Whiteboard.

AMD Provides AI
Processing for Canon
Broadcast Systems
SANTA CLARA, Calif.-based
AMD has announced that the
Versal AI Core series, with AMD
AI Engine technology, has
been selected by Canon for its
Free Viewpoint Video System.
According to the company,
this system has the potential
to revolutionize the viewing
experience for live sport broadcasts
and webcasts. Versal AI
core devices deliver powerful
machine learning-based video
processing at the edge for
Canon camera systems.
The Canon Free Viewpoint
video system consists of a ring
of high-resolution cameras
that surround a stadium or
arena to allow broadcast
viewers to see the action on
the field from any position or
angle in the stadium. The technology
dramatically changes
how sports can be viewed,
putting viewers in the middle
of the action. The Canon Free
Viewpoint system is expected
to be deployed at multiple
professional basketball arenas
in the U.S., as well as at other
premier sports venues around
the world.

solution allows our system to
do more in real time than we
ever envisioned possible, "

that the Versal AI Core series

from the several minutes that
traditional architectures might
require. The technology will
deliver broadcast viewers
around the world unique,
never-before-seen images. Live
broadcast networks can also
monetize live-event metrics
such as game and player
statistics.
Canon technology will move
the intelligence of AI-based
video processing to the edge,
thereby reducing the workload
in the data center. Versal AI
Core will power the image-processing
system that sits behind
each of the Canon cameras
deployed around a venue, and
it will implement proprietary
Canon algorithms for image
detection, segmentation and
more using ML at the edge.
