not win the award, he felt

singer/songwriter, but fate
had other plans for him.
His parents persuaded him
to pursue " a more stable
career, " and, subsequently,
he earned his degree in
electrical engineering from
Clemson University.
Inspired by the success
story of the Indigo Girls,
which started out as a
house band at the Trackside
Tavern in Atlanta and
eventually got a record deal,
Walker still hoped to pursue
his music career. With
that in mind, he moved to
Atlanta. However, needing a
steady income, he scoured
the papers every week for a
suitable job. In 1989, Walker
landed one at Cape Dixon
Associates, working as an
audio engineer. It was his
introduction to the AV industry,
and it was where he
began to refine his AV skills.

and founding partner
of Waveguide LLC, a nationfull-service
AV consulting

- Walker co-founded
Waveguide Consulting
in 1996. His strategy for
success was to lean into his
knack for finding the gaps
and pains in the industry
and then build a business to
resolve them.

that Walker adheres to
have shaped Waveguide's
success. He never overcomplicates
the process of
communicating what the
AV technology will do for
his clients. He also believes
in being realistic when
working on projects with
his clients; accordingly, he
doesn't make false promises
or exaggerate the results.
Instead, Walker tells clients
what they are getting with
their system and, equally
importantly, what they are
not getting. In addition to
designing systems, Waveguide
provides managed
services. So, the company
stays with the systems it
creates.
Ultimately, Waveguide
takes the client's vision
and makes it happen. For
Walker, it is rewarding when
things go well, and the ultimate
feedback loop is the
praise and repeat business
that Waveguide receives
from its clients.
Walker understands that
the tech industry is moving
at a rapid pace and that no
single person can keep up
with it. He believes in hiring
smart people and finding
the right balance of up-andcoming
and seasoned employees.
Walker jokes that
the younger generation of
consultants in the firm feels
like they are starting from
Chapter 37 of " The Book of
AV, " and they're at a slight
disadvantage because they
don't know the origins of AV.
However, he also notes that
the younger AV consultants
have a higher tolerance for
risk and a quicker adoption
rate for new technologies.
