But there are many ways for integrators
to prepare for these attacks, like employing
Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) in the
network systems, which adds extra layers
to password protection. According to
Simopolous, companies can also manage
and implement regular patching and
updating programs for company software
and hardware.
The adoption of zero-trust security,
which forces companies not to automatically
trust activity inside or outside its
network, is also an effective defense. Zero
trust security forces companies to verify
anything trying to connect to their systems
before granting access.
Simopolous also suggests integrators
implement company-wide vulnerability
scanning tools, which he says will hunt
for known vulnerabilities on software and
hardware. He also mentions access limitations,
patching, and response plans will be
useful too.
" Receive and review incoming threat
alerts and news feeds that detail vendor
breaches, software and hardware vendor
security updates or patches, and newly
discovered attack methods, " says Simopolous.
" Limit access to specific applications,
customer systems, and associated files to
only users who need them for their duties
and be prepared by having an incident
response plan in place in case there is a
need to respond to discovered breaches
and security incidents. "
Preparation for ransomware and other
cybersecurity attacks require more than
just technological implementations as
managers and leaders need to make sure
all employees are educated and aware of
the threats posed by them.
" An industry topic emerged where integrators
talked a lot about how important it
is to think about cybersecurity and be able
to build confidence with their customers, "
says LeBlanc. " But just because it's talked
about in articles, and conferences, and in
webinars, doesn't necessarily mean that
all integrators are walking the walk when it
comes to cyber security. "
" But an incident like this really takes
it from that theoretical conversation and
makes it more of a reality, " LeBlanc continues.
" I think this should prompt integrators
to make sure they are investigating how
commercialintegrator.com
they can build that cybersecurity credibility
and getting their staff trained and how
they can get their companies and technicians
certified for cybersecurity training. I
think it takes it to that next level. "
He also mentions what he calls a " mindset
challenge " in terms of technicians being
willing to admit that they must spend
more time learning about these attacks
and accepting that they need to learn
new skills and update the way they handle
cybersecurity in relation to these attacks.
" Integrators need to
make sure they are
diligent and vigilant
when it comes to
making sure they're
protecting everything
they do. " - Tom LeBlanc
Following the attack, Kaseya announced
that they had obtained a decryptor key
from what they called a trusted third party
but would not share other details on the
acquisition of the key. They claim the key
works, but for many of the victims, the
damage has already been done.
Security teams are now more aware than
ever that poor cybersecurity from a vendor,
like their integrator, could potentially cost
them millions of dollars and are more selective
about which integrators to employ.
" Technology Integrators can expect increased
scrutiny from their customers who
are looking to verify that their providers
and partners have proper cybersecurity
programs in place, " says Simopolous. " We
continue to see an increase in third-party
cybersecurity assessments and cybersecurity
language within the legal agreements
being utilized as standard vendor reviews
for projects. Integrators can expect that
the customer cybersecurity assessments
sent to them will include a deep dive into
their overall internal cybersecurity posture
and questions into the way technicians
deploy their projects. "
There is still much to learn about
cybersecurity, but Simopolous ensures
that taking the correct steps available will
undoubtedly make companies significantly
safer from attacks like these.
" Having a strong cybersecurity
program in your company doesn't mean
that you are 100% protected, but it does
mean that you are taking significant
strides to reduce the chance or impact of
an incident, " says Simopolous. " A proper
cybersecurity program today requires a
comprehensive approach that includes
assessments and testing, policies and
user training, and detection and response.
By building a model of continuous
improvement with its cybersecurity
program, an organization will not only
will help protect themselves but also their
customers. " CI
