Audinate Tackles
The Supply-Chain
Crisis Head On
ADDRESSING ONE OF the
most important, complex and
dynamic issues impacting the
global commercial AV industry,
Audinate announced actions
that the company has been
taking to minimize and mitigate
the impact of global supply issues.
Also, as part of its strategy
to ensure availability of product,
the Australia-based company
announced next-generation,
drop-in replacements for its
Brooklyn and Fremont modules.
Semiconductor analysts
report that the global
supply-chain snarl is largely
a demand issue more than a
supply issue. It's exacerbated
in lower-volume industries like
commercial AV because chip allocations
are being diverted to
large-volume clients and industries
like consumer electronics,
automotive and the military.
The supply-chain challenges
facing commercial AV manufacturers
took on additional
complexity and intensity in
Q3/21 when widely used chips
in the AV industry suddenly and
almost became unavailable.
" An already-challenging
situation became even worse
during Q3/21 and left manufacturers
scrambling to find
solutions, " Mathew
Mornington-West, chief
operating officer of Audinate,
explains. Audinate explains
that, despite these challenges,
the company has shipped more
units of its chips, cards and
modules (CCM) through May
2022 than through the same
time period in the prior year.
" There is a delta between
reality and perception, "
12
Mornington-West says. " Audinate
has a well-connected,
highly qualified team of professionals
that negotiated with
chip manufacturers to secure
supply on behalf of Audinate
and OEM partners. "
To counter the impact of
global supply-chain issues,
Audinate has instituted various
programs. Several of these
strategies were implemented
in advance of recent chip
shortages. They have served
to mitigate significantly the
impact of a very challenging
supply environment. They are
as follows:
› Audinate has strategic partnerships
with chip suppliers,
including Xilinx, NXP and
SkyWorks (formerly Silicon
Labs), and continuously lobbies
for increased allocation of chips
on behalf of the more than 500
Dante manufacturer licensees.
This has been successful in
procuring inventory for several
key parts for Audinate and its
licensees. It also ramped up
manufacturing of several Dante
products in March 2022.
› Announced Brooklyn 3,
the next-generation, drop-in
replacement for the Brooklyn
2 module and Fremont 3, the
replacement for the Dante AV
" Fremont " module. Samples
for both products will
be available in the coming
months, and production is
expected to start in October.
Audinate is also evaluating
alternative options for Broadway
and Ultimo products.
› Audinate already had
strong adoption of its software
offerings with Dante EmbedCommercial
Integrator SEPTEMBER 2022
ded Platform and Dante IP
Core, which has accelerated in
recent months as manufacturers
look to reduce the number
and type of chips they need to
procure, and as they diversify
their designs with different chip
manufacturers. Dante Embedded
Platform is a Linux software
solution running on off-the-shelf
ARM and x86 processors from
a variety of chip manufacturers;
meanwhile, the IP Core allows
manufacturers to run the Dante
image on a variety of prequalified
FPGAs.
" These are challenging
times for the AV Industry, and
electronics manufacturers
at large, " Mornington-West
acknowledges. " However, we
continue to take aggressive
actions to ensure availability
of Dante solutions for our
manufacturing partners. I'm
confident that the combination
of lobbying for more supply on
behalf of the industry, designing
next-generation products
based on more widely available
parts and migrating customers
to software-based solutions will
give manufacturers multiple options
for enabling Dante in their
products. And, [it] will ensure
that customers continue to get
access to AV-over-IP solutions. "

#Productivity
Research: 57% of
Organizations Take
Days or Weeks for
Infrastructure Access
to be Approved
strongDM, the Burlingame, Calif.-based
company behind the
People-First Access Platform,
released the results of its latest
survey, the 2022 AccessProductivity
Gap Report. It
reveals that almost two-thirds
of organizations have their
productivity diminished on a
daily or weekly basis due to access
issues. The survey of 600
DevOps professionals highlights
the consequences that
organizations can face when
access is poorly managed and
when technical teams turn to
workarounds to access critical
systems.
The report indicates that
it takes days to add tools to
existing access solutions for
40% of the organizations surveyed,
with 21% of businesses
waiting weeks or months. As a
result, access, productivity and
security create a negative loop:
When technical staff is unable to
access new tools, productivity is
impacted. When that happens,
it isn't surprising that impatient
employees will devise workarounds
that create unintended
security risks.
In an effort to keep data
and systems secure, access to
infrastructure and new tools is
restricted. But what is the cost?
Fifty-seven percent of organizations
report that it takes days
or weeks for access requests to
be approved, not counting the
10% of organizations that don't
have clear SLAs for access at
all. Meanwhile, businesses experience
lost productivity. Additional
findings are as follows:
› About 64% of organizations
have their productivity
impacted on a daily or weekly
basis due to access issues.
› About 73% of employees
require 15 or more minutes to
get access to infrastructure, with
more than 30% requiring more
than 30 minutes.
