FINAL THOUGHTS
Tending to the
Project's Backend
COMMERCIAL INTEGRATOR is rather unique in
its focus. Instead of centering on case studies,
news releases, etc., we lead with covering
commercial AV integration as a business. As it
says on each issue's front cover, we are " The
Business Handbook for Technology Professionals. "
A recent conversation with a few industry
leaders reaffirmed my belief that, although
now is an opportune time for integration
businesses to succeed, it's also a time when
integration leaders must navigate
a constellation of challenges. I
learned a lot during a chat with
NSCA's CEO, Chuck Wilson;
Electronic Contracting Company's
president, Kyle Habben; and
Mat Hennings, who at the time
was vice president of finance at
Communications Engineering
Company. My biggest takeaway
- which actually precipitated a
joint CI and NSCA webcast with
them in August - was that the
backend of a project is equally important as the
tech-forward frontend.

the projects your firm takes on. In speaking to
NSCA members and industry leaders, I learned
that integrators can't afford to believe that " all
business is good business. "
Integrators have a fixed number of people,
and they must ensure that their personnel's
time is well spent. Clients who are focused
only on the lowest bid, and who clearly don't
understand the value that AV integrators bring,
might be diverting attention
from prospective customers who
genuinely appreciate the art and
science of crafting integrated systems.
I recommend prioritizing
clients who recognize the value
your firm delivers and are willing
to pay for quality.
Paying for quality also applies
to team members, and this
brings me to my second point.
Things are tricky at the moment
because, with supply-chain
eye candy. When you walk into a museum and
experience curved DVLED walls, interactive
digital signage, spatial audio and fantastic
lighting, it's easy to say that is what commercial
AV is all about. But if you're an integration
company leader, it's not the sizzle that protects
a positive cash-flow position, maintains employment
and assures adequate product stock;
instead, it's good business practices and agility
in navigating turbulent market conditions. And
leaders have dealt with more than their share of
turbulence lately - from a pandemic to a resulting
recession, from a blazingly fast recovery to
resulting inflation, from ongoing supply-chain
snarls to global military conflict, all the way to
another possible impending recession.
So, how can integrators position themselves
favorably in these challenging times?
problems reaching a new peak this year,
many integrators have project backlogs in the
millions or tens of millions. It can be difficult
(and expensive) to retain the entire A-list team
when sitework is hung up, pending equipment
availability, and you're not sure how to keep
productivity levels high.
I suggest making strategic investments in
education and training while your staff has the
time. That could be anything from earning a
CTS, CTS-I or CTS-D credential, to becoming
a Digital Signage Certified Expert (DSCE), to
earning Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) certification
for imaging expertise. With technology
trades converging, now is the time to wow
technology managers with your team's
documented, certified knowledge.
