DESIGN SHOWCASEDESIGN SHOWCASE INDEPENDENT LIVING The Crescent at Oakleaf Village - Wallick Communities Toledo, Ohio Submitted by: RLPS Architects Lancaster, Pa. Wallick Communities wanted to add a new independent living component to the Oakleaf Village of Toledo, comprised of a memory care residence and a 1980s-era building providing licensed residential living and assisted living. The new housing needed to meet consumer expectations for abundant daylight, open floor plans and covered parking while maintaining affordability for older adults in this Midwestern moderate income area. The design result is two parallel hybrid home apartment buildings with a connected pavilion between them. These three buildings form The Crescent, a micro-community for active seniors that provides affordable rental housing. Private garage parking and carport options are available for a separate fee which helps keep the base costs down. Initial design studies reviewed potential density for two separate hybrid home buildings on the tight 1.46 acre site. Recognizing that the minimal amenities in the existing building would not appeal to new consumers, the design team was challenged 78 | supplement to environments for aging
