Environments For Aging Launches Inaugural Industry Survey

ew in 2021, Environments For Aging will take the pulse
of the senior living design industry with its first EFA Industry Survey. Senior living architecture/engineering,
construction, and interior design companies as well as owners/
operators from across the U.S. are invited to participate. Respondents will help paint a picture of how the industry fared in
2020 and what challenges it expects to face in the future.

The data reported from participants-including the number of
new contracts signed, value of those projects, a breakdown of
project types, and how COVID-19 impacted industry work-will
be analyzed by Environments for Aging for a state-of-the-industry report to be published in the Summer 2021 issue and online.
The deadline to respond is Wednesday, May 5. The survey

EFA to host Spring Summit in April
Environments for Aging will hold the 2021
EFA Spring Summit online April 27-28, with
a session lineup focused on pandemic response in the senior living design community.
Created as a complement to the inperson EFA Expo & Conference scheduled
to take place Aug. 28-31 in Chattanooga,
Tenn., the virtual summit features two days
of online education and networking. Attendees can earn up to four AIA HSW continuing
education credits during the event. Here's an
overview of the schedule.
TUESDAY, APRIL 27
EFA Design Trends Roundtable: In
this panel conversation, leaders of senior
living design firms and owners/operators will discuss the successful projects
they've delivered together and how those
projects have weathered the past year. Led
by Jennifer Kovacs Silvis, editor-in-chief of
Environments for Aging, this roundtable will
explore recent award-winning communities
and the care models, resident populations,
and programs that their designs support.
Additionally, panelists will offer an inside
look at how these industry-leading projects
responded to COVID-19. After the roundtable, attendees will have the opportunity to
join a 30-minute Q+A session with the panel
in a breakout room.
Senior Living Design for Infection
Prevention and Aesthetics: Speakers
from Thoma-Holec Design will discuss
current trends for interior materials, explore
how to remodel for resident safety, and
offer suggestions for how to market a senior
living community in a post-pandemic world.

Presenters will cover materials cleanability,
effective spending, and new concepts to
safely enrich seniors' lives via technology
and other new best practices.
Building Assessments and New
Approaches in a Post-Pandemic
World: As COVID-19 spread throughout
the world, the senior living design industry
assessed how facilities could prevent
and contain infectious diseases. Using
industry guidelines and building examples,
a panel of experts will discuss how to
evaluate existing conditions. They'll also
share experiences gathered from senior
living care providers across the U.S. on
the solutions that worked well in response
to COVID-19, from both a design and
operational perspective.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28
Infection Control Roundtable: Infection control experts will discuss how the
product design and specification process
has and will continue to evolve in response
to COVID-19 and offer advice to help cut
through the current infection control noise.
Following the presentation, attendees will
be broken into product-specific breakout
rooms for conversations to be led by each
roundtable panelist.
Happy Half-Hour: The event will close
with the opportunity for attendees to come
together to network and hear more about
what's planned for the in-person EFA Expo
in August.

J+J Flooring
names Impact
Project recipient
J+J Flooring announced that St. Luke's
Home, a project submitted by Susan
Mulholland, principal interior designer
for Mulholland Art & Design Commercial
Interiors (Tucson, Ariz.), has been selected
for the company's Impact Project.
Launched last year, J+J's Impact
Project, for which Environments for Aging magazine serves as media partner,
improves environments for seniors in
underserved communities with free flooring and installation. Design professionals
were encouraged to submit applications
on behalf of their clients or eligible facilities
within their communities. A panel of senior
living design professionals helped select
the project.
Located on the edge of the University
of Arizona campus in the historic Feldman
neighborhood of Tucson, Ariz., St. Luke's
Home is a holistic, 55+ assisted living
community with limited financial means.
While providing pro bono design services
last year through a volunteer project
organized by the Arizona Builders Alliance,
Mulholland noticed the facility needed new
flooring, inspiring her submission.
The new flooring from J+J is part of a
capital improvement project St. Luke's is
undertaking to replace flooring throughout the facility, upgrade existing resident
apartments and common areas, and build
additional housing space. The new flooring
installation is expected to be completed in
