n senior living, there's no more important design goal than achieving a true
sense of community by delivering spaces that successfully support engagement
and interaction between residents, staff, and families. That ambition is evident
throughout this year's Remodel/Renovation Competition, where design refreshes
strategically target the places where people meet.
For example, you'll fi nd our Gold winner, Asbury Bethany Village - The Bistro,
submitted by THW Design, revived what was essentially a pass-through space to
become a hub of activity via a new dining and bar venue with lots of gathering spaces
to encourage lingering over a coffee or cocktail. Likewise, Silver winner Sagewood
Senior Living Community - Café, submitted by Spellman Brady & Company, took an
outdated, underutilized café and rejuvenated it with a modern industrial design that
delivers a space reminiscent of a neighborhood market. And while dining continues
to be a priority in new projects, the lobby as fi rst impression and meeting point is
certainly present in this year's submissions including our Bronze winner Wesley
Enhanced Living - Upper Moreland - Reception/Lobby, submitted by Lenhardt
Rodgers Architecture + Interiors. There, a once-segmented space was opened up to
deliver various activity zones and sight lines to them (and a nearby outdoor courtyard).
Together, these projects represent outstanding efforts in the renovation of existing
space as well as the trajectory this industry is on in helping to bring people together.
Winners were chosen by a jury assembled by SAGE (Society for the Advancement
of Gerontological Environments) and will be honored at an EFA magazine awards
luncheon to take place at the 2021 EFA Expo & Conference, scheduled for Aug.
28-31 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Thank you to that jury (listed at right) as well as all our
program participants. Turn the page to meet the winners, and keep turning to enjoy
a gallery of all projects reviewed.-Jennifer Kovacs Silvis, editor-in-chief

About the submissions: The Remodel/Renovation Competition submissions come from across the U.S. and cover
a variety of construction costs and project scopes. Every year, a multidisciplinary panel of invited jurors from
SAGE (Society for the Advancement of Gerontological Environments) reviews the submissions. The panel includes
architects, interior designers, researchers, academics, regulatory experts, and providers. Jurors view the submissions
according to their areas of expertise, then rate the submissions and provide comments to help clarify the rationale
for the rating before selecting winners. Jurors are excluded from reviewing projects that they or their fi rms were
involved with; jurors who are associated with projects in the fi nalist round are not permitted to vote for winners. All
participants pay a small entry fee and receive coverage of their project in the Remodel/Renovation Gallery (see page
48). The top three projects receive expanded coverage on the pages that follow. All write-ups were provided directly
by the submitting fi rms and were not edited for content by the Environments for Aging editorial staff.
