and the menu expanded with the
new Bistro and bar. Wasted space was
activated with additional gathering
zones which emphasized an existing
architectural clerestory feature to create
an open dining venue with natural
light from all directions.
The resident committee held a huge
fundraising campaign to get this project
moving. The residents wanted this
built, and, in three years of fundraising,
they raised enough to make it happen!
" This new space is open, welcoming,
and peaceful. With the greens
and touches of sustainable plants
and a mural of a waterfall, this space
beckons residents and associates to
come together for conversation, food,
or just a cup of coffee. Residents and
associates love that there is so much
space to spread out and be in community.
Many elements of this space
were to be environmentally friendly
as well as food-to-table offerings and
fresh foods for healthier lifestyles.

Asbury Foundation.
Jury comments:
* This space was transformed from
a one-use function to what is
certainly now a hub of resident
activity. The space allows for many
functions and invites residents to
gather and linger with friends.
* The reorganization of the overall
space was the star here. The
multiple zones with varied
seating configurations orbiting
the central dining offer new
experiences day after day.
* Beautiful transformation of space!
Nice color contrast with warm
and cool colors. This contrast is
both visually appealing and good
for visual changes with aging.
The addition of nature elements
helps to make the space even
more inviting, as one resident
seems to agree with. Seating
contrasts well with floor color in
the dining area and appears easy
to move. Good involvement of
residents in the process.
* The impact of removing a wall
to create an open environment
with multiple purposes and
socialization opportunities for
residents was best captured in
this project. The color palette
and use of natural materials
provides an oasis for the senses
and welcomes you in. The space
planning, furniture layouts, and
attention to acoustics really make
this project shine.
* Tall spaces can be the most
challenging particularly for
designers to meet the needs
of people, and especially older
residents, including good lighting
and acoustics as well as providing
a place to sit that feels cozy and
comfortable, and at the same
time screening the sounds from
the serving area. The designers
cleverly used freestanding
partial height millwork walls and
banquette walls and changes in
flooring materials to break down
the scale of this large space. The
use of the combination of up
lighting and large-scale pendant
lighting make the space feel bright
and welcoming without glare. The
pendants also give some intimacy
or scale to the high ceilings.
