Laura Hodges
Founder
Laura Hodges Studio
Based in the Baltimore area, Hodges fi rst
earned a degree in business before going back
to school for interior design at the New York
School of Interior Design. She cut her teeth
with New York designers Jamie Drake and
Thomas Jayne and counts M. A. Design Studio
owner Marian Akinloye as a mentor. Beyond
her refi ned interiors, Hodges is an advocate for
sustainability in her design work (she is a LEED
AP and a GREEN AP) as well as at Domain by
Laura Hodges Studio, the brick-and-mortar shop
and online boutique she launched in 2018 that
features local and globally sourced fair trade and
sustainable home décor, original art, and one-ofa-kind
pieces.
Design inspirations
Born in northern England, Hodges' design sense
brings together the infl uences of her Norwegian
grandmother, British mother, and Jamaican father
into a tailored and modern signature style layered
with vintage fi nds. She says she was " always
drawn to art and architecture, " but " my biggest
infl uences came later once I was in design school
with amazing professors and mentored by fabulous
designers. "
On launching her fi rm
Hodges went out on her own in 2016 " simply
because I love to work directly with my clients, "
she explains. That being said, she acknowledges
there is more that goes into owning a fi rm than
design. " I love the business and marketing side of
owning my own business. As the owner, you're
responsible for everything from the fi nancial
health and growth of the company to the
marketing, PR, and managing a design team. "
Recently completed work
Known for her streamlined and restrained
interiors, Hodges recently fi nished a gut
renovation of a double-height loſt in downtown
Baltimore. The fully customized space features
bespoke furniture, " allowing us to create a
beautiful project and collaborate with wonderful
local artists and makers, " she says.
On designing through a global lens
" It's important to celebrate design from all
parts of the world, " she says, " and not just as an
infl uence on Western design. Acknowledging
the importance of all cultures helps to increase
awareness and make design more accessible to a
wider range of up-and-coming designers. "
