Happy July! I can't believe we're halfway through
2022. Here at HD, we are coming off a busy few
months. First with HD Expo + Conference in April
(see our recap of the three-day show on page 79), and
our sold-out HD Awards ceremony in June in New
York, where we announced the winners from more
than 1,100 entries in both products and projects. It was
such a special night celebrating the industry. View

Talk about inspiration-this issue features 21
tastemakers who are reshaping the industry and
design's role in creating meaningful spaces. From
Brian De Lowe, cofounder of Proper Hospitality, who is redefi ning the luxury-lifestyle
sector with eclectic, lived-in properties (all designed by Kelly Wearstler) to power
couple Eric Höweler and J. Meejin Yoon, whose installations explore social good at the
intersection of architecture and landscape design, and designer Roman Alonso, who has
helped create the je ne sais quoi of many of the Ace hotels.
Plus, we celebrate a few milestone anniversaries of people and fi rms who are
moving the needle in terms of experiential design and check in with a handful of
newly formed fi rms who are defi nitely ones to watch. You will also fi nd the fi rst of
a series of interviews in partnership with the Hospitality Diversity Action Council
(HDAC), which will highlight diverse voices in the industry. In this issue, meet Maya
Bird-Murphy, who is making design more accessible for young people with her
nonprofi t organization Mobile Makers.
Last month, it was an honor to spend a morning with legendary restaurateur Danny
Meyer and designer Matt Goodrich of his namesake New York fi rm at Union Square
Hospitality Group's latest, Ci Siamo, for the second installment of our newly launched
HDTV video series where we get a behind-the-scenes tour of various projects from the
creatives behind them. On page 51, get a taste of the 15-minute interview that dives into
their successful collaboration and Meyer's unique process. Head to hospitalitydesign.com
to watch the fi rst two episodes (spoiler alert: David Rockwell plays the piano at his newly
designed CIVILIAN Hotel) and look for a new tour every month. We hope it is a way for
you to get to see and learn about great design.
