How would you describe the personality of the
Other House, the members club-hotel hybrid you
recently opened in London's South Kensington
neighborhood?
[It's] very Zen, very cool. The moment you walk
in, you enter this different world of laidback
relaxation. It doesn't feel like a hotel; it feels like
you are in your own space. It delivered exactly
what we wanted it to, but I could never have
anticipated that. The most amazing thing was that
I knew every inch of the layout. I knew what it was
going to look like, but I hadn't even thought about
what its personality was going to be. And it has a
personality. The moment we opened our doors, it
was its own person. It was quite extraordinary.
What kind of experience did you want to create?
The whole essence came from the other company
I own, which specializes in acquiring, renovating,
and [leasing] long-stay rental properties. The
concept came from seeing what the long-stay
tenant wanted. I flipped that to looking at people
who stay in hotels that don't have a sense of
place, [where the guest] feels like a visitor and it's
a revolving door. I felt we could fuse the best of
long-stay residential living with the best of hotel
living and create an environment where you have
that residential feel, but you have hotel services
on tap.
What was the intention behind the design, which
you collaborated on with London-based Bergman
Design House?
I wanted to go for a contemporary clubby
[aesthetic] because it is very saturated and
very layered. There is a lot of color, but it's still
contemporary in its feel. It is meant to be this
bold, different kind of statement and although it is
called the Other House and you are meant to feel at
home, I didn't want to make it feel homey.
How have you seen the consumer change since
the pandemic?
The consumer has changed quite significantly
post-Covid. Slow travel and sustainability have
become all the more important. You have to look
at what people want, and you have to move with
the times. hd
