Are there any childhood memories that
hinted at your professional future?
We are a travel family. My mom talks about
the fact that I was on a plane before I could
even walk, so that might have been the reason
for my love of travel. We took a lot of trips.
[Another] little bit of backstory is that my
mother ran beauty salons in hotels in India, so
I was in and out of hotels since I was 9 years
old. It looked fun, and at the time I was like, 'I
think I want to do that.'
You kicked off your career with ITT
Sheraton, eventually rising to vice
president of strategic hotel support for
the North American division. How did
you land that first job?
I was working for the Four Seasons Hotel
Houston. I loved Four Seasons, and I was
happy to continue to work there. But then
we had a career fair. At the time, we were
graduating, and I met the recruiter for
Sheraton. We got to talking and he asked me if
I was interviewing for Sheraton's management
training program, and I said I was not. He
convinced me, and the rest is history.

After the Sheraton years, you became
GM at the Westin Philadelphia. What
did you love about that experience?
I felt this huge responsibility for the 220 people
that were employed at the hotel-to care for
their families and for them. Even though I
had worked in multiple different hotels and
different positions, at the end of the day, the
buck stops with the GM. Being a friend, coach,
leader, and psychologist for your own staff is a
whole different thing.

Then came W Hotels, where you were
vice president of brand operations.
How did that era shape you?
It was work I had never done before; I had
been an operator for 14 years at that point, and
I knew how to run a hotel. I stepped into this
role eager to learn. I didn't think I would be
very good at it. It surprised me how much I
truly enjoyed it, and that was my entrée into the
brand and marketing world. But that's where I
found my passion.
