What are some of your earliest memories
of hospitality?
My early memories are road trips; we used to get
in the car and drive across the country. When
we saw that Holiday Inn road sign (funnily
enough, now I work for IHG), it was like hitting
the motherload. There was always going to be a
pool, air conditioning, a good meal. When I was
in grade school, my parents would take us to New
York. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
When I was 16, my grandmother brought me and
my sister to Europe, and that's when the bug took
off for me because we were able to experience
hospitality in a whole new way.

Did you go to school for design?
I thought I was going to go into the music
business. I majored in art history, but I had this
real notion to stay on top of pop culture, social
culture, whatever was happening. Being in
LA, I had a lot of friends going into the movie
business, and I loved how people experience
music emotionally. When I was at UCLA
doing my undergrad, I worked at different
music companies such as Capitol Records and
Weintraub Entertainment Group, trying to see
what that career would look like. It was exciting
and cool, but it was [also] going to be a challenge.

How did you decide to go into design?
I went into the interior design program at UCLA,
so I ended up doing eight years of college. That's
when the world opened up to me in terms of
design. I had to do an internship the last year
of my studies, and I was lucky enough to land
with James Northcutt Associates, not knowing
that Jim was such an influential hotel designer.
Everyone at the time was going off to work
for these big workplace corporate firms, and I
got to work under Jim and [design principal]
Darrell Schmitt. It was such a pivotal moment
for me. Luckily, we were a small company, and
I got to see projects close up, even as an intern. I
was eventually hired on. My first major project
working with them was the Four Seasons Resort
Hualalai on the Big Island. I was traveling to
Hawaii and getting hands-on experience. The
team at Four Seasons taught me so much about
hotel design.
What did you learn from your time
with BraytonHughes Design Studios
and under Barry Sternlicht as a design
director working on the W Hotels brand?
It was an amazing experience to live and
work in San Francisco [while working at
BraytonHughes], especially during the early years
