KIMMY QUILLIN
Kimmy Quillin grew up in a small town in Wisconsin where there
weren't many museums or even an art scene to immerse herself in, but
" everything I did was artistic, " she recalls, whether she was drawing,
coloring, or painting. Despite this natural ability, Quillin didn't think
art could be a fulltime gig. She took a few art classes in college at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison, but it wasn't until she moved to New
York in 2006 and saw several friends att ending MFA programs that
being an artist became a reality. " Hanging out with them, I got a peek
into what it would be like to pursue art on a diff erent level, " she says
Her journey took a couple detours: She designed bikinis for two years
and had plans to open her own coff ee shop. When that fell through in its
fi nal stages, " I was leſt with this huge hole of energy and att ention, and I
wanted to work hard on something, " she says. She bought cheap acrylic
paints and started painting on boards she had stashed away. Soon, she
bought canvases, and " I never stopped painting, " Quillin says.
Her early pieces were expressive and abstract, with geometric lines
drawn on top of blended colors. " In retrospect, I was trying to make
sense of whatever chaos was happening in my life, " she says. The work
she posted on Instagram started garnering att ention, and this year, she
was commissioned by Uprise Art to create a piece for Chief Chicago, one
of the outposts of the women's networking club designed by AvroKO.
Flatt ened Curves was made during the peak of the pandemic and
explores the shape of a circle slice-a motif found throughout Quillin's
work. The muted tones were infl uenced by The New York Times hot zones
maps that showed where COVID was most present.
Recently, a custom work in a New York residence took on a diff erent
form. Working with Brooklyn-based design fi rm Home Studios,
Quillin's mural enhances the apartment's bathrooms with Le Corbusierinspired
lines painted atop a faux fi nish that gives the piece depth and
the illusion that the walls are stone or marble.
Whether she's learning how to oil paint or improving her drawing
skills, " anytime I'm making things, that's what feels best. I am least
aware of time or [the outside world]. I'm absorbed in it, " Quillin says. " I
have a lot of ideas I want to be working on. I'm dying to get into the room
where I can make them happen. " hd
