Rehabilitation Center
in Downey, Calif., provides
specialized care
to individuals suffering
from spinal cord injury,
stroke, brain injury, and
other neurological disorders.
From the hospital's
earliest days, textile
art such as rug, chair,
and basket weaving,
was incorporated into
occupational therapy
to help with patients'
rehabilitation. During a
$418 million campus revitalization,
completed
in October 2020, this
history provided inspiration
for a " tapestry as
a metaphor " approach,
which drove the design direction of the project. For example, the design
integrated Otomi tapestry artwork, in a contemporary application, honoring
the diverse culture that surrounds Rancho Los Amigos. This type
of embroidery, created by the Otomi people of central Mexico, abounds
with symbols of native flora and fauna.

NOMINATIONS OPEN FOR 2021
HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENT AWARDS
THE CENTER FOR HEALTH DESIGN, in partnership with Healthcare Design
magazine, is accepting entries for the 2021 Healthcare Environment
Awards. The program is divided into six categories, including acute
care, ambulatory care, long-term care, conceptual design, student
work, and alternative settings.
The submission deadline is July 14. Winners will be announced at
The Center's awards presentation during the 2021 Healthcare Design
Expo & Conference in Cleveland, Oct. 23-36. For more information
