campus despite having no outward main entrance.
They instead treated the plaza above as
the building façade, and light was introduced
into the lab through skylights inspired by the
triangular skylights of the Louvre Museum.
This allows those on campus a glimpse of the
innovation happening below and those in the
lab a window to the outside.
JURY COMMENTS:
* A truly remarkable reuse of existing space into an innovative
learning environment. The addition of skylights transforms
the unassuming courtyard while providing a needed link
from Lab to campus.

RENOVATION WAS CHOSEN for this project as
the basement space in the UIC Neuropsychiatric
Building had been sitting unused for years, and
while outdated it was easily accessible and close
to other College of Medicine buildings. Revitalizing
this space and keeping it on campus was key.
UIC challenged the design team to create a
space that educates using the latest technologies
as well as a space for " out-of-the-box " thinking,
experimentation, research, and collaboration.
It is one of the only training spaces existing
that aims to advance medicine and surgery in
unknown or harrowing terrains such as outer
space or a life raft. The resulting space used the
flexibility of theater design as inspiration. Theater
stages are designed with behind-the-scenes
storage spaces for quick set and costume changes.
The centerpiece of the SITL is the Innovation
Lab, which connects a traditional surgical space
with an experimentation research garage.
One of the biggest challenges was making
an underground, abandoned basement into a
destination that inspired innovation. UIC also
wanted the school to have a presence on the

* Great effort to introduce natural daylight into a dark
basement while also providing a visual connection to the
outside. A clean and contemporary approach with an
inventive application of finishes.
* The project expressed historic architecture with an explosion
of modern innovation.
* Loved the energy in the hallway. The addition of the skylights
is so impactful on all levels. This is a technically demanding
program that few firms have experience designing and it
feels like a success.
