PATH TO HEALTHCARE DESIGN: After
earning my bachelor's degree
in psychology and international
studies from Pittsburg State University,
I worked at the Center for
READing at PSU, Children's Mercy
Hospital Adele Hall in Kansas City,
Mo., and Spring River Mental Hospital
in Riverton and Columbus,
Kan. During these experiences, I
learned to identify opportunities
for change and was eager to implement
solutions to the design challenges
we faced each day while
providing care and interventions.
Poised to pursue a career in child
life, I realized that in order to create
real change, I needed to see the
entire picture. At that point, I identified
earning an architecture degree
would be the fi nal piece to the
already firm foundation of experience
I had gained thus far.
ON YOUR DESK NOW: A children's
inpatient tower for a confidential
client. I've advocated for opportunities
to serve on teams for
pediatric projects and have been
given the opportunity to be on the
team for HOK's fi rst pediatric inpatient
tower. My experience in
child life services at a major pediatric
medical center is being used
in the earliest phases of design.
Part of my personal mission is to
ensure the developmental and
cognitive needs of children and
adolescents are being served as
the design develops.
WHAT SUCCESS MEANS TO YOU: Success
is being empathetic to our
user groups, to the client, and to
the users I will never meet but our
building will impact for the next
50-plus years. My success is being
willing to listen and ask questions
to learn, develop trust, identify
opportunities for the future, and
then act on that knowledge to advocate
and implement solutions.
ON YOUR DESK NOW: I'm fortunate
that I get a chance to work
on a variety of behavioral health
projects and initiatives spanning
planning; design; research;
community engagement; business
development; workplace
mental health; and inclusion,
diversity, and equity. One initiative
I'm working on is helping
write the Advisory Guide for
Acute Psychiatric Facilities for
California with the California
Department of Health Care Access
and Information (formerly
OSHPD), alongside my colleagues
at HDR. This has been
a rewarding experience and
something I feel will impact the
quality of behavioral health care
for all Californians.
MOST REWARDING PROJECT TO DATE:
Planning a new net-zero carbon
behavioral health outpatient facility
for King County in Seattle.
The facility brought together
innovation, research, and clinical
practice to improve mental
health and addiction treatment.
It had a heavy focus on regenerative
design, mental health design,
and social equity, resulting in a
project that was not only healing
but also equitable and sustainable.
This study changed the way
I look at my design work.
INDUSTRY CHALLENGE ON YOUR
RADAR: Climate change, health
equity, and the mental health
crisis are three defi ning crises of
our time, escalating more quickly
than feared. The question we
need to ask ourselves as an industry
is: How can we make the
healthcare design process more
equitable and contribute positively
to people and the ecology
that surrounds them? For me,
the answers lie in regenerative
design, which is about designing
buildings that reverse the harm
that we've done to our natural
systems and the communities
that they are in.
MUST-HAVE SKILL FOR HEALTHCARE
DESIGNERS TODAY: Adaptability.
The design of healthcare
facilities is spatially defined by
necessary and rapidly evolving
technologies for providing care,
pushing us to re-examine our
spatial typologies.
