By supporting the
emotional journey
of those affected by
cancer, the UNC Rex
Cancer Center CONQUERS
CANCER
TOGETHER. The
community-centric
and comprehensive
approach treats the
body, mind, and spirit
of cancer patients and
their caregivers. Traditional
clinics, medical
oncology, and radiation therapy are combined
with non-traditional therapies to enhance the
quality of life: acupuncture, support groups, massage,
art, music, yoga, and spiritual care.
The design balances effective and functional
treatment spaces with open and supportive
community spaces. The design team engaged
with the UNC Rex Patient and Family Advisory
Council throughout the design process. The
Council provided critical feedback that helped
inform some of the design decisions.

Committee, waiting rooms
are transformed into smaller,
intimate living rooms, complete
with the warmth of a limestone
hearth, to act as wayfinding
and gathering moments
throughout. Bottom: To support
the emotional journey of
patients, caregivers, and the
medical staff, convenient
areas of respite are located
throughout the building and
feature local artists' murals.

With the aging population of baby boomers,
Deaconess Health System responded with a facility
designated as a specialty hospital focusing
on orthopedic and neuroscience patients.
The new, six-story patient tower will occupy
215,000 square feet and offer a complete range
of services, including interventional, medical,
and surgical, as well as diagnostic imaging,
therapy, research, and education. The hospital
is filled with natural sunlight beaming through
two-story glass curtainwall and a skylight in
a rotunda. The generous, modern, comfortable
interiors provide a pleasant environment
where visitors can enjoy coffee or a bite to eat
and comfortable spaces to relax while waiting.

Top: Upon arrival, guests are
greeted by a 20' x 30' custom
art feature that reflects the Ohio
River's local presence and sets the
new addition's nature concept.
Bottom: Each of the patient rooms
features floor-to-ceiling windows
and provides modern conveniences
for patients and families. The
staff zone is extremely efficient.
The 6-foot-wide space provides
everything a team member needs to
provide outstanding care and within
