SUSTAINABLY SEATED
With the observance of Earth Day in April, being kind
to the planet is in the spotlight even more than usual. At
i+D, we celebrate sustainable design in every issue but still
manage to be impressed by the many roads designers take
to get there. From post-industrial waste to the boiling of
insect shells, the efforts of the design community to protect
the planet reach new levels every day and are a reflection
of the positive impact design can deliver.

Creative
Association
Whether creating spaces that promote
wellbeing, evoke a memory or a sense of
awe, or help us to learn, share, work better,
be compassionate, or feel at home, designers
are responsible for connecting the person
who will experience a space with something
significant. But the connectivity goes far
beyond that. Designers innately are gatherers
of ideas and inspiration, actively culling
knowledge and insight from people and places
within the profession and beyond it as well.
In this issue of i+D we delve into some of the
countless ways design creates connections-
across design sectors, within communities and
related industries, and, ultimately, between
a person and a project. We speak with
interior designers who have enhanced their
businesses with specialized knowledge in feng
shui and antiques ( " Value Added, " p. 24)
and we investigate the divine relationship
between interior design and real estate
( " Perfect Combination, " p. 36). We also dig
into the ways designers from all sectors-
residential, workplace, healthcare, and

more-are borrowing concepts from other
areas of design to create spaces that surpass
expectations ( " Crossing Over, " p. 30).
It's no small task to take an idea from
concept to completion. With an ever-curious
nature and natural inclination to never
stop learning, networking, mentoring, and
creating, designers have the power, both
through their work and by example, to keep
us all connected-to one another and to our
best selves as well.

1.	CARL HANSEN & SON + ILSE CRAWFORD
Carl Hansen & Son tapped London-based designer Ilse
Crawford to develop a fresh color palette for the iconic
First Five Masterpieces collection that Hans J. Wegner
created for the company in 1950. The result is an
environmentally friendly line of five earthy, water-based
colors with a slightly transparent finish, which allows
the natural oak grain to show through. In addition to
the sustainable finish, the wood used to craft all five
designs comes from responsibly managed forests and no
material is wasted-scraps and sawdust that result from
production are repurposed to provide heating for more
than 400 homes in Denmark.
2.	STUDIO MOISÉS HERNÁNDEZ
Illustrating local and traditional techniques, the Grana
chair by Studio Moisés Hernández is a study of two
natural elements: wood and cochineal dye, which is
made via an ancient technique that utilizes the shells of
the female cochineal insect to produce a natural pigment.
Depending on the time the wood spends immersed in
a mixture of hot water, cochineal, and other natural
substances, the resultant hues can vary from purple and
scarlet tones to oranges and vibrant reds, while still
allowing the natural grain of the wood to show through.
3.	IAN LOVE | DESIGN
Ian Love's hand-carved wood furnishings and objects are
a reflection of his belief in the " singular tree concept, "
the practice of using fallen wood pieces, which he
sources locally, in their entirety. Love is particularly
attracted to spalted wood, which lends his designs even
greater character. The results are stools, room dividers,
headboards, dining and side tables, and more that are
truly one-of-a-kind and double as art pieces that happen
to be completely functional as well.
4.	ARPER
Designed by Lievore Altherr Molina, the Duna 02 chair
is one of Arper's most recognizable pieces. New this
spring is an eco-friendly version of the distinctive chair
made with 100 percent recycled post-industrial material
and available with either powder-coated steel or wood
legs. The company notes the sustainable model is both
inspired by nature and in the service of it as well.
