ith COVID-19 vaccinations now widely
available, we've finally emerged into
the new normal we tried so hard to
envision during the darkest days of the pandemic.
It's an ideal time to pause and take stock of where
we are within our practices, our profession, and
the broader industry that enables us. We've always
known designers are resourceful, but COVID
stretched us in previously unimaginable ways.
Almost overnight interior design firms responded
deftly to pandemic lockdowns by moving teams
and operations to satellite work-from-home offices.
This upheaval actually leveled the playing field a bit
because firms of all sizes had to contend with many
of the same issues. It sometimes seemed that smaller
firms were having an easier time pivoting to meet
new circumstances.
Certainly, there was an unprecedented sense of
community, cooperation, and information sharing,
especially in the early days of the pandemic. The
A&D profession put competitive concerns aside.
Colleagues and competitors were eager (until screen
fatigue set in) to jump on Zoom to share resources
and attend social events.
Designers working from home soon discovered the
convenience of Material Bank, a known resource
that was ahead of its time when it launched in 2018
but might not have been top of mind until 2020.
Who would have guessed the pandemic would
happen? Sampling and specifying is a different story
when you're at home and the materials library is
miles away at the office. Material Bank warehouses
hundreds of thousands of materials, and designers
working off-site at multiple locations can get the
same samples at the same time so they can see and
touch materials together in a videoconference and
move projects along. And, since every package
includes items from multiple vendors, Material
Bank's mission includes reducing the number of
inbound packages to firms. That's a feature that will
continue to resonate when we return to the office.
Sustainability and resiliency are core to the future
of the planet and to our design practices. In every
project we do, no matter how big or small-from
subsidized housing to mega mansions-we need
to make sure we're specifying the safest materials.
Twenty years ago, we were introduced to cradleto-cradle
manufacturing. Today the conversation is
about carbon emissions. How do we know which
samples are the right ones? Designers are intuitive
and smart. The growth and widespread adoption of
green programs and resources pave the way. We're
moving forward. Watch this space for new insights
and direction!
