An Inside
View
Some corporate clients are already working with
their design teams to create outdoor offices where
employees can experience work, relaxation, and
wellness in exciting new ways. One designer I know
has transformed the green areas near a parking
lot into an outdoor campus with innovative
conferencing and Zoom capabilities. Monitors are
safely housed in sealed containers. Everything is
solar powered. The designer has essentially doubled
the client's workspace without constructing a
building. Employees have gained a new space where
they can escape the ordinary.
uring the pandemic there were so few
avenues of escape that the whole concept
took on new meaning. For essential
workers, it meant having an occasional day off to
relax at home. For those lucky to be working at
home, getting outside for a walk around the block
in between Zoom meetings felt just as restorative.
Now, hospitality venues are once again competing
for clients by offering a wide variety of experiences
from historic seaside inns that have been in the
family for generations to modern ski lodges. Brand
loyalty is built by design decisions based on a deep
understanding of guest expectations-especially
with a focus on wellness.
How will the space be used and experienced?
The desire to consciously explore every aspect
of the customer experience within the built
environment is what we interior designers do best.
We bring an experiential design attitude to every
sector-hospitality, residential, corporate, and
healthcare-even when our clients don't think this
way. Make problem solving the core of your design
philosophy, celebrate it, and help clients get on the
same page. Usually, that's where they want to be.

The client experiential journey is especially
important in the healthcare sector. How is the
patient received into a hospital-whether they are
walking through the front door or arriving in an
ambulance? How do they experience the space as
they are rolled down the hallway? Replacing harsh
overhead lighting with indirect lighting is just one
way to make the experience less frightening. When
the patient finally ends up in a room-whether
it's the ICU or a patient room-will they see art,
a window, or a blank wall? Art depicting nature
has a soothing effect. We have to think about all
the occupants in the complex, not just the doctor
or the nurse or the patient, but the support staff
and families as well. A thorough examination of
everyone's experience within the space is well worth
the time it takes. It always yields new insights. The
experiential approach is core to all good design.
