Over on the East Coast, tens of
thousands of visitors flock to Martha's
Vineyard every year to take in the
picturesque landscape and admire the
tradition-steeped New England area. But
tradition isn't all that can be found here,
as some residents have broken the local
design mold and infused the island with
a modern twist. In Martha's Vineyard:
New Island Homes, a new book from
Monacelli Press, Keith Moskow and
Robert Linn explore 25 contemporary
homes that stand out among the typical
Vineyard aesthetic of shingled houses and
beachy cottages. The authors examine
the different styles and design goals
of these properties, including nautical
themes, environmental concerns,
and the appropriateness of materials and
scale. Although all the residences are
distinct in their own ways, they share the
same goals of highlighting the beautiful
scenery, withstanding harsh climates,
and shying away from tradition.
