Take Outdoor Living
to the Next Level
Now that the scene for the outdoor living area is set, next comes
the actual living. In addition to an inviting daybed, Richard Frinier
thinks another staple in everyone's outdoor living space should be
a serving bar cart (or two) for entertaining.
In that vein, Dometic has recently unveiled MoBar: a bar cart
on steroids. It's a sleek, commercial-grade stainless steel mobile
bar on wheels that can easily be moved back and forth between
the indoors and outside-an important consideration in case of
inclement weather and an extra perk so the host can continuously
enjoy mingling with guests. It's fully equipped with preparation
surfaces, a rotomolded ice-basket that keeps beverages cold,
and storage areas for ingredients, glassware, and spirits. And two
of the models, MoBar 300 and MoBar 550, offer single and dual
zone refrigeration.
" Dometic MoBar was designed to change the way people serve
beverages outdoors and to turn any outdoor living space into a
stylish and professional entertaining space, allowing hosts to offer
a new level of hospitality to their guests, " says Peter Kjellberg,
Dometic chief marketing officer and head of global verticals.
" We worked closely with professional bartenders throughout
the product development phase to ensure that MoBar is fully
equipped with everything a professional would need. "
Once the private bar is open, sophisticated moments of play can
be created via elevated styles for billiards, ping pong, air hockey,
and foosball tables, and more. Founded by Michael Zaretsky,
former professional table tennis athlete and coach, and designer
Bernard Semerdjian, 11 Ravens offers artful interactive gaming
furniture, usually crafted out of teak and aluminum, that can
withstand the elements and bring people together. (In fact, so
important to our health is the element of play, that Zaretsky also
founded the Sport & Art Educational Foundation, which helps
to rehabilitate and heal those struggling with early onset brain
diseases including Alzheimer's. A portion of the profits from
select 11 Ravens designs supports SAEF.)
" Game tables in outdoor spaces invite people to engage in an
activity. They create not only an aesthetic impact on an outdoor
space but also on life, " says Sea Zeda, director of business
development for the brand. " Our game tables stand alone as art
pieces, and the majority of our clients commission personalized
design. Depending on the game table design chosen and
customizations made, each client can create their own mood for
their outdoor living space. "
36
These designs have run the gamut from light and beachy pool
tables for the deck of a coastal Malibu home to sleek metal
ping pong tables in poppy colors for an ultramodern Dallas
estate. " Each client can select the feeling they want to bring to
their backyard, patio, or deck, adding a resort-inspired feel to a
residence, " says Zeda, alluding to the Arclight Table Tennis Table,
which has a home on the rooftop of a luxury suite at the Nobu
Hotel at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. " When you can bring welldesigned
entertainment furniture into your outdoor living space, it
can absolutely create the feel of a luxury resort. "
And that retreat feeling can be enjoyed day or night, thanks to
outdoor lighting like the hurricane lanterns offered by Georg
Jensen. A great way to cast illumination in lieu of permanent
outdoor lighting or even as an additional glow, they're essential
in creating ambience. " Whether it is inside or outside, hygge
(the Danish word for a quality of coziness) is a core part of the
Danish culture, " says Ragnar Hjartarson, creative director for
Georg Jensen. " In Denmark, we accessorize our outdoors by
bringing a bit of hygge to our garden or balcony. The light plays
an important role in creating a cozy and convivial atmosphere that
promotes wellbeing. "
Two Georg Jensen lanterns, in particular, fit the bill: Frequency,
by Kelly Wearstler, who found inspiration in the Scandinavian and
Californian landscape and took cues from the fluidity of water;
and Koppel, a frosted glass and mirror-polished stainless steel
design that is a reworking of an original piece by Danish designer
Henning Koppel. " Material choice is essential when designing
for outdoors in that it needs a higher level of functionality and
endurance, " Hjartarson says. " Stainless steel and glass are highly
durable materials. Both are resistant to corrosion, oxidation, and
changes in temperature. "
And, just like indoors, a rug can anchor it all. Take Nanimarquina,
for instance. The brand creates outdoor rugs using 100 percent
recycled PET material crafted to have the look and feel of natural
fibers, as seen in its new Tres Outdoor collection. It offers a
sustainable and design-minded solution to a very tough problem:
keeping an outdoor space as beautiful and inviting as the
interiors while staying clean and enduring the elements. And the
recycled content helps to save energy and minimize impact on
the environment.
