The Kaleidoscope Project:
Tapping BIPOC Talent
Showhouses traditionally have a limited run, but the
Kaleidoscope Project in Lenox, Massachusetts, is
different as it was not disassembled after the last tour
in June. Instead, it lives on in the Berkshires as a
popular bed and breakfast at The Cornell Inn. Another
difference that will continue to attract guests to the inn
is that this showhouse exclusively features designers
who are black, indigenous, or people of color (BIPOC).
The Kaleidoscope Project was the brainchild of
designers Amy Lynn Schwartzbard and Patti Carpenter,
who saw a need to showcase the talent and amplify the
voices of diverse creatives within the design industry.
Showhouse proceeds are going toward up-and-coming
designers seeking a career in the arts and design industry
as part of a partnership with Black Artists + Designers
Guild (BADG), Parsons School of Design, and the New
York School of Interior Design (NYSID) for the next
generation of diverse designers.
Eighteen guest rooms and suites, a lobby area, dining
room, and bar were transformed by the 21 BIPOC
designers. While it's clear these rooms were designed by
different designers, in that each room has a personality
that's distinct from the next, there is also a cohesive
quality that runs through the entire project. The owners
of the inn did not provide design direction. Rather,
Kaleidoscope Project organizers gave designers the
themes of rest, reflection, and rejuvenation as a general
road map along with three palettes: neutrals, cools, and
warms. Every designer was then free to interpret their
spaces in their own way.
" What better collaboration than to seek out designers
of color to create and install this creative environment
that will stand forever, " says Everick Brown, principal,
Everick Brown Design. " The Kaleidoscope Project
is an idea that is empowering designers of diverse
backgrounds to shine. It's providing equitable
opportunities for all to create. It's building a legacy. It is
quite amazing what came about out of the project. "
At once recalling the area's
Gilded Age past and looking
toward its future, Everick
Brown Design created a warm,
soothing space to welcome
visitors to The Cornell Inn.
