The road to a complete education is
lengthy to say the least, and most would
argue it has no defi nable end. Such a
notion might seem daunting
but, for the curious creative mind, it's
a very positive and exciting thing.
In the universe of design and creativity,
there will always be something new
to learn-whether you are a fi rst-year
design student or the principal of a fi rm.
In this issue, we look at the intersection
of design and education from a variety
of angles. We peek into impressive
classroom and campus designs that
illustrate how vastly the direction for
these spaces has changed and how
much those changes mean to students
and educators alike ( " Class in Session, "
p. 32), and we speak with educators
from some of the top design schools to
learn how they are teaching tomorrow's
design professionals-and, just as
importantly, what today's students are
teaching them ( " Balancing Act, " p. 40).
We also dive into several internships
and fellowships that are tackling the

As you read through this issue, we hope
it reminds you of favorite classrooms,
classes, and educators-what makes
them stand out in your own educational
journey and how you can perhaps offer
some of the same to the next generation
of students and design practitioners.
Can you design forward-thinking, nextgen
learning spaces? Can you teach
what you yourself have learned? Can
your fi rm offer opportunities to today's
design students? And the question that
will spawn a thousand answers: What is

NEOCON(SCIOUS)
As we readied this issue for the printer,
the design world was readying for a return
to NeoCon, a staple on the show circuit
for anyone involved in the contract side of
design. The vast nature of the event makes
for interesting trend forecasting, and one
thing clearly evident among the product
previews is a heightened awareness among
product designers of the role they play in
the comfort, safety, and sustainability of
our shared spaces.

allows for adaptable seating arrangements
and the ability to interact face-to-face from
a safe distance.
3. Recycled and Resistant. Kith + Kin
upholstery fabric from Designtex uses more
than 30 percent postconsumer recycled
polyester in its makeup and features a stainresistant
nanotechnology fi nish.
4. Mobile architecture. Designed by Fig40
for Stylex, the Still line of attractive and
acoustically benefi cial dividers aids in
keeping smaller groups separated without
the need for structural walls.
