ENC Preschool:
Outdoor and Active
Permeability between indoor and outdoor space goes even
further at the Environmental Nature Center (ENC) Preschool
in Newport Beach, California, completed in 2019 with a design
by LPA Design Studios.
This 10,380-square-foot preschool is a sister project to the
Environmental Nature Center, devoted to providing a hands-on
experience with nature, thanks to an adjacent park. Opened
in 2008, the nonprofit center was the first LEED Platinumcertified
building in Orange County, California, and it operates
at net-zero energy usage. The ENC Preschool is also net-zero
and makes ample use of its large butterfly-shaped roof, which
holds enough photovoltaic panels to provide 105 percent
of the building's electrical needs. In tandem with a natural
ventilation strategy and highly efficient radiant-floor heating,
the school's nonprofit operator can keep its utility costs down.
The roof channels water into bioswales, where it's naturally
treated before leaving the site. And the efforts have not gone
unnoticed. In 2020, the preschool was named to the American
Institute of Architects' annual COTE Top 10 list honoring the
nation's best sustainable buildings and also was awarded
Project of the Year in the BUILT category by the Los Angeles
chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council.
Classrooms at the ENC Preschool open to a central courtyard,
with movable walls allowing a hybrid of indoor-outdoor spaces.
" When we started looking at the preschool, it was, 'How do
we combine nature and learning?' This really was about
landscape and how we started to relate nature to the learning
process, " says Rick D'Amato, design director, workplace, LPA
Design Studios. " The design had to reinforce that connection
and that meaning. Everything was designed so that you have
that connection with nature. "
A primary goal for
the design of the ENC
Preschool was to
combine nature and
learning at every turn.
