Once inside, however, the school's indoor-outdoor setting was
especially conducive to the pandemic. " ENC Preschool never
closed for a single day during COVID, and it was because of
that space and the play area, " the architect says. " It's important
to learn those types of lessons. "
But it's not just the health of outdoor air: It's the broader
connection to the outside world and how it stimulates young
minds. " My high school had almost no windows, just some
skylights. It was thought that any kind of connection to
the exterior was a distraction, " D'Amato recalls. " But you
don't want to shut out the world. You want to bring it in. When
you're outside, the way you focus and learn is completely
different from inside. Learning through play, especially
in preschool, is so much more effective. "

Kids are sheltered yet still outside. The most popular and
oft-used spaces, the courtyard and breezeway act as a natureplayground
with boulders, logs, and a tree. " I don't think I've
actually seen a class in session in one of the rooms, " D'Amato
adds. " They're always spilling out. It's amazing how much
the kids want to be outside and how much they really benefit
from that. They even take naps out there, which is amazing. "
Such openness for these children and teachers is enabled
by a secure perimeter. The school is encircled by a large fence,
with a sliding gate opened each morning to welcome students
into the preschool's administrative lobby. " That is the only
way you can get in, " D'Amato explains. " It's really important
that you focus that entry so the educators can see who is
coming in and who is who. "
