SCAD transformed a
Design
Voices
At SCAD, equitable design is expressed through access: SCADnow's leading-edge
virtual venues transcend traditional barriers of the physical classroom and
invite global citizens to engage with fellow creatives, expand their professional
networks, and fulfill their dreams. SCAD just debuted the Ruth E. Carter
Endowed Scholarship, which ensures that students from traditionally
underrepresented communities have pathways to top-tier education. And
SCAD SERVE's new workforce housing initiative-yet another imaginative
adaptation of existing space-will provide affordable options for teachers,
firefighters, and others who benefit from shorter commutes and deeper, more
proximate engagements with colleagues and stakeholders. Indeed, SCAD
SERVE's mission, which develops solutions to meet needs of food, clothing,
and shelter, and to address environmental challenges, actualizes EQ22
principles and potentials.
In the workforce housing sphere, SCAD's practices stand in radical contradistinction
to " targeted reinvestment " -otherwise known as gentrification -which displaces
design heritage and excludes residents. Study the Urban Displacement Project's
displacement and gentrification map of Greater New York, and observe the
stark differences between unchecked development versus SCAD's legacy of
revitalization and inclusive historic preservation. Consider SCAD's investment in
The Beach Institute and the Sapelo Island First African Baptist Church-places
of import to Savannah's diverse and historically underserved communities, and
investments SCAD made because we believe deeply in public spaces that educate
and enlighten. SCAD invests in people, not projects. SCAD builds bridges toward
intercultural exchange; we do not build walls. And we create platforms of vibrant,
vital expression-consider the Walter O. Evans Center in the SCAD Museum
of Art, and Poetter Hall's shopSCAD, which promotes works by students and
alumni who hail from more than 100 countries. SCAD provides a passport to
powerful cultural perspectives.
Helpful Hands,
Open Hearts
How do we develop authentic attachments with
places, products, and ideas, and how can designers
amplify such attachments to propel sustainability
and equity? These are the questions at the heart
of EQ22's emotional quotient.
SCAD has always cherished what exists,
understanding that true beauty emerges in the
revitalization of oft-overlooked spaces. As Jun'ichirĊ
Tanizaki wrote in In Praise of Shadows, " We do
prefer a pensive luster to a shallow brilliance ... "
The Alex Townsend Memorial Courtyard at SCAD
Museum of Art is a shining example of Tanizaki's
wisdom. A place of contemplation, the courtyard is
called " Savannah's 23rd Square " because of its echo
of the city's aesthetics. It is an open-air garden for
reflection. Alex's story is a poignant one: a young
artist gone too soon whose memory transcends
mortality, whose brief imprint reverberates in one
of the world's most historical cities, whose presence
invites all to gather and bask in art. That is Alex's
legacy-the invitation of an artist.
When we address the emotional quotient, as SCAD
did with the expansive Townsend Courtyard, we
celebrate our humanity and create more touchpoints
for engagement. We genuinely express universal
themes-love, loss, vulnerability, courage. Our stories
and spaces become relatable and relevant. And we
deepen dialogue with our extended community-
because the courtyard is open to anyone.
I have long known that positive and welcoming
environments are conducive to learning,
development, and growth. At SCAD, this means
making student accommodations feel like home
and ensuring that academic spaces, like the recently
renovated Clark Hall, truly communicate the
tenor of today's professional environments-so the
journey from an impromptu pitch in an airplane
seat to an office near the C-suite feels familiar
rather than foreign. SCAD students step seamlessly
from sophisticated, thoughtfully cultivated learning
environments into Fortune 100 workspaces. With
considered, nurtured confidence, university-to-work
transitions for SCAD students are comfortable as
they begin their creative careers.
Consider again Poetter Hall, SCAD's portal of
possibility. SCAD's very first building has always
had the quality of a self-fulfilling prophecy for me.
Whenever I pass the historic cannons-an homage to
the former armory-and step inside, I'm flooded with
memories of our unbridled optimism, our confidence
that SCAD would be the best. We didn't see SCAD
as a fledgling idea. We saw it fully formed and flying.
Soaring! Students saw it that way, too, and made it so.
Such positive thinking is the essence of the creative
journey, and I want everyone who steps inside
Poetter to experience the projection of ideas into
reality within SCAD's unique context. So, we
created SCADstory, a 4D experience that immerses
guests in the university's history and, more
importantly, conveys the emotional qualities that
make SCAD a launchpad for inventive concepts
and creative careers. When you walk within
SCADstory you're experiencing the intersections
of EQ22: emotion, equity, environment. A space
imaginatively adapted and teeming with friends,
neighbors, and visitors investing in community and
a shared vision that will stand the test of time.
