N OKLAHOMA COUPLE HAD WANTED to renovate
their master bath for several years, but the time was
never quite right. When the wife unfortunately
passed away, her husband decided to create the
spa space they had always desired in her honor.
As he is an avid scuba diver, he and the design
team of Edmond, Okla.-based Edmond Kitchen,
Bath, Home chose colors and materials reminiscent of the couple's trips to the Caribbean. He also
tasked the designer with ensuring the space was
accessible for future needs.
CREATING A SENSE OF PEACE
AND THE GREAT OUTDOORS
" My client hasn't been able to travel during
COVID, so this new bathroom was a way to keep
busy after his wife died, " said Helms, who explained that because there were limited showroom
visits taking place, they made a lot of their selections and purchases online.
The former bathroom had a plethora of dysfunctional elements, including a sunken tub that
was a hazard on the pathway to the toilet room.
There were multiple door swings that broke up
the space, and the functional storage was minimal.
In addition to eliminating the tub, adding pocket
doors and updating storage needs, Helms and codesigner Megan Greve conceived the new space
with inspiration from a special photo.
" When the client came to us, he had a beautiful
photograph taken from a favorite Caribbean scuba
location that we used to drive a lot of the design
decisions, " said Helms. " Most inspiration pictures
are of other projects, so working off of a landscape
photograph was very different and a lot of fun. "

photo of one his and his wife's
favorite islands.

specified LED lighting, lowflow faucets and low-VOC
cabinets that are certified
through the KCMA Environmental Stewardship Program.
