A Breath of Fresh Air
A kitchen and bath were designed with
the comfort, health and well-being of its
occupants top of mind
WHEN A HOME IN CALIFORNIA needed to be rebuilt because of a fi re, the
developer wanted to take a holistic approach with the goal of creating a
dwelling that was comfortable and easy to live in and one that connected the
indoors and outdoors. Bach Tran looked to architectural designer Ayesha
Sikandar of Burlingame, Calif.-based MA Dimensions Inc., as they had
worked well together on another of his projects in the Bay Area. Tran, who
was also the project manager on this rebuild, starts his projects by addressing
wellness and incorporates those elements as if he and his family would be
living in the home.

ADDRESSING THE MOST
IMPORTANT ELEMENTS
Incorporating a sense of overall well-being
was always the center of this project, and much
attention was paid to VOC levels, indoor air quality,
water fi ltration and bringing the outdoors inside.
" For any item we incorporated, we wanted
to make sure it would provide comfort to the
homeowners, " said Sikandar.
She specifi ed high-effi ciency particulate air
fi lters and did not install carpet, which can be high
in VOCs. Th ere is a water fi ltration system in the
kitchen, which faces the backyard, and folding
patio doors bring the outside in and provide
ample sunlight.
" When the family is spending time in the great
room just off of the kitchen, they can entertain
seamlessly with the outdoors via these 8-ft. by 20ft.
panoramic doors - even when they are closed, "
said the designer. " Sitting in the great room feels
like you are sitting outside. "
Dual-pane, frosted windows with shades
provide privacy and also control the amount of
light coming in. According to Tran, at any angle
inside this house, you can look and see outside -
even in the primary bath, where the design team
added two tall windows.
