Renovation goals included connecting the
dining room to the kitchen and great room and
adding a massive island the homeowners could use
for food prep and to entertain. Sutter put function
at the top of the list and kept the design simple to
make finishing within the short timeline possible.
She also narrowed options before presenting them
so that client decisions were easier.
" The clients were really decisive, which was also

helpful, " explained the designer.
With two structural adjustments - removing
the peninsula and flipping the locations of the
butler's and walk-in pantry - Sutter quickly
created a more open layout and improved
functionality. There was now plenty of room to
add the island. The former butler's pantry became
a beverage center, creating a sensible transition to
the dining room beyond. The designer relocated
the walk-in pantry behind the new beverage
center, making it accessible but inconspicuous
behind a pocket door.
Although she moved the refrigerator to the opposite
wall, Sutter kept other elements like the stove
and sink where they were, cutting out the need for
changes to gas and water lines. Inside the cabinets,
pullout shelves, pot and plate drawers and a pop-up
mixer provide improved functionality.
" They really wanted to keep things organized
and tucked away, " said the designer. " Panels on all
appliances keep a seamless, clean look, and the
accent of polished nickel and black round out the
contemporary feel to the space. "
ENHANCING A SISTER SPACE
The project scope extended to include a nearby
powder room. In that case, the designer moved
the toilet because it had been right in front of the
door, offering barely enough room for knees to
fit in front of the vanity. The changes necessitated
shifting the plumbing, but it made sense to do
it. The room now boasts a contemporary industrial
style also with accents of polished nickel
and black.
" While we were doing all of the other renovations,
it would have been remiss to not update the
functionality of the powder room, " said Sutter.
" The whole floor feels like it's joined together as
one space. "
UPGRADING TO A SUPER SHOWER
For the primary bathroom, the clients asked for a
functional retreat with a multi-jet shower. Sutter
began by gutting the space, although she kept
the plumbing where it was to lessen the cost. The
water closet, which had been set on a diagonal,
was removed and rebuilt with a straight layout.
The ugly, bulky corner tub that took up too much
space also came out.
